Luke 8:22-39

NLT 22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's cross over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and started out. NIV 22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out. NLT 23 On the way across, Jesus lay down for a nap, and while he was sleeping the wind began to rise. A fierce storm developed that threatened to swamp them, and they were in real danger. NIV 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. NLT 24 The disciples woke him up, shouting, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" So Jesus rebuked the wind and the raging waves. The storm stopped and all was calm! NIV 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. NLT 25 Then he asked them, "Where is your faith?" And they were filled with awe and amazement. They said to one another, "Who is this man, that even the winds and waves obey him?" NIV 25 "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him." NLT 26 So they arrived in the land of the Gerasenes, across the lake from Galilee. NIV 26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. NLT 27 As Jesus was climbing out of the boat, a man who was possessed by demons came out to meet him. Homeless and naked, he had lived in a cemetery for a long time. NIV 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. NLT 28 As soon as he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell to the ground before him, screaming, "Why are you bothering me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Please, I beg you, don't torture me!" NIV 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!" NLT 29 For Jesus had already commanded the evil spirit to come out of him. This spirit had often taken control of the man. Even when he was shackled with chains, he simply broke them and rushed out into the wilderness, completely under the demon's power. NIV 29 For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places. NLT 30 "What is your name?" Jesus asked. "Legion," he replied -- for the man was filled with many demons. NIV 30 Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "Legion," he replied, because many demons had gone into him. NLT 31 The demons kept begging Jesus not to send them into the Bottomless Pit. NIV 31 And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. NLT 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the hillside nearby, and the demons pleaded with him to let them enter into the pigs. Jesus gave them permission. NIV 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them, and he gave them permission. NLT 33 So the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the whole herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake, where they drowned. NIV 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. NLT 34 When the herdsmen saw it, they fled to the nearby city and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. NIV 34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, NLT 35 A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, for they wanted to see for themselves what had happened. And they saw the man who had been possessed by demons sitting quietly at Jesus' feet, clothed and sane. And the whole crowd was afraid. NIV 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. NLT 36 Then those who had seen what happened told the others how the demon-possessed man had been healed. NIV 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. NLT 37 And all the people in that region begged Jesus to go away and leave them alone, for a great wave of fear swept over them. So Jesus returned to the boat and left, crossing back to the other side of the lake. NIV 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left. NLT 38 The man who had been demon possessed begged to go, too, but Jesus said, NIV 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, NLT 39 "No, go back to your family and tell them all the wonderful things God has done for you." So he went all through the city telling about the great thing Jesus had done for him. NIV 39 "Return home and tell how much God has done for you." So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.
