Luke 8:26-39

CEB 26 Jesus and his disciples sailed to the Gerasenes' land, which is across the lake from Galilee. NRS 26 Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. CEB 27 As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, a certain man met him. The man was from the city and was possessed by demons. For a long time, he had lived among the tombs, naked and homeless. NRS 27 As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. CEB 28 When he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell down before him. Then he shouted, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!" NRS 28 When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me"— CEB 29 He said this because Jesus had already commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had taken possession of him, so he would be bound with leg irons and chains and placed under guard. But he would break his restraints, and the demon would force him into the wilderness. NRS 29 for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) CEB 30 Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "Legion," he replied, because many demons had entered him. NRS 30 Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" He said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. CEB 31 They pleaded with him not to order them to go back into the abyss. NRS 31 They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss. CEB 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs. Jesus gave them permission, NRS 32 Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. CEB 33 and the demons left the man and entered the pigs. The herd rushed down the cliff into the lake and drowned. NRS 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. CEB 34 When those who tended the pigs saw what happened, they ran away and told the story in the city and in the countryside. NRS 34 When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. CEB 35 People came to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone. He was sitting at Jesus' feet, fully dressed and completely sane. They were filled with awe. NRS 35 Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. CEB 36 Those people who had actually seen what had happened told them how the demon-possessed man had been delivered. NRS 36 Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. CEB 37 Then everyone gathered from the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave their area because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and returned across the lake. NRS 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. CEB 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged to come along with Jesus as one of his disciples. Jesus sent him away, saying, NRS 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, CEB 39 "Return home and tell the story of what God has done for you." So he went throughout the city proclaiming what Jesus had done for him. NRS 39 "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.
