Mark 1

DBY 1 Beginning of the glad tidings of Jesus Christ, Son of God; NIV 1 The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. DBY 2 as it is written in [Isaiah] the prophet, Behold, *I* send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way. NIV 2 It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way"-- DBY 3 Voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of [the] Lord, make his paths straight. NIV 3 "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' " DBY 4 There came John baptising in the wilderness, and preaching [the] baptism of repentance for remission of sins. NIV 4 And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. DBY 5 And there went out to him all the district of Judaea, and all they of Jerusalem, and were baptised by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. NIV 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. DBY 6 And John was clothed in camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and ate locusts and wild honey. NIV 6 John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. DBY 7 And he preached, saying, There comes he that is mightier than I after me, the thong of whose sandals I am not fit to stoop down and unloose. NIV 7 And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. DBY 8 *I* indeed have baptised you with water, but *he* shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit. NIV 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." DBY 9 And it came to pass in those days [that] Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptised by John at the Jordan. NIV 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. DBY 10 And straightway going up from the water, he saw the heavens parting asunder, and the Spirit, as a dove, descending upon him. NIV 10 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. DBY 11 And there came a voice out of the heavens: *Thou* art my beloved Son, in thee I have found my delight. NIV 11 And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." DBY 12 And immediately the Spirit drives him out into the wilderness. NIV 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, DBY 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him. NIV 13 and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. DBY 14 But after John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee preaching the glad tidings of the kingdom of God, NIV 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. DBY 15 and saying, The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God has drawn nigh; repent and believe in the glad tidings. NIV 15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" DBY 16 And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon, and Andrew, [Simon's] brother, casting out a net in the sea, for they were fishers. NIV 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. DBY 17 And Jesus said to them, Come after me, and I will make you become fishers of men; NIV 17 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." DBY 18 and straightway leaving their trawl-nets they followed him. NIV 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. DBY 19 And going on thence a little, he saw James the [son] of Zebedee, and John his brother, and these [were] in the ship repairing the trawl-nets; NIV 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. DBY 20 and straightway he called them; and leaving their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, they went away after him. NIV 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. DBY 21 And they go into Capernaum. And straightway on the sabbath he entered into the synagogue and taught. NIV 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. DBY 22 And they were astonished at his doctrine, for he taught them as having authority, and not as the scribes. NIV 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. DBY 23 And there was in their synagogue a man [possessed] by an unclean spirit, and he cried out NIV 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, DBY 24 saying, Eh! what have we to do with thee, Jesus, Nazarene? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the holy one of God. NIV 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" DBY 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace and come out of him. NIV 25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" DBY 26 And the unclean spirit, having torn him, and uttered a cry with a loud voice, came out of him. NIV 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. DBY 27 And all were amazed, so that they questioned together among themselves, saying, What is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him. NIV 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." DBY 28 And his fame went out straightway into the whole region of Galilee around. NIV 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. DBY 29 And straightway going out of the synagogue, they came with James and John into the house of Simon and Andrew. NIV 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. DBY 30 And the mother-in-law of Simon lay in a fever. And straightway they speak to him about her. NIV 30 Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. DBY 31 And he went up to [her] and raised her up, having taken her by the hand, and straightway the fever left her, and she served them. NIV 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. DBY 32 But evening being come, when the sun had gone down, they brought to him all that were suffering, and those possessed by demons; NIV 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. DBY 33 and the whole city was gathered together at the door. NIV 33 The whole town gathered at the door, DBY 34 And he healed many suffering from various diseases; and he cast out many demons, and did not suffer the demons to speak because they knew him. NIV 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. DBY 35 And rising in the morning long before day, he went out and went away into a desert place, and there prayed. NIV 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. DBY 36 And Simon and those with him went after him: NIV 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, DBY 37 and having found him, they say to him, All seek thee. NIV 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!" DBY 38 And he says to them, Let us go elsewhere into the neighbouring country towns, that I may preach there also, for for this purpose am I come forth. NIV 38 Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so I can preach there also. That is why I have come." DBY 39 And he was preaching in their synagogues in the whole of Galilee, and casting out demons. NIV 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. DBY 40 And there comes to him a leper, beseeching him, and falling on his knees to him, and saying to him, If thou wilt thou canst cleanse me. NIV 40 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean." DBY 41 But Jesus, moved with compassion, having stretched out his hand, touched him, and says to him, I will, be thou cleansed. NIV 41 Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" DBY 42 And as he spoke straightway the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed. NIV 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured. DBY 43 And having sharply charged him, he straightway sent him away, NIV 43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: DBY 44 and says to him, See thou say nothing to any one, but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing what Moses ordained, for a testimony to them. NIV 44 "See that you don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them." DBY 45 But he, having gone forth, began to proclaim [it] much, and to spread the matter abroad, so that he could no longer enter openly into the city, but was without in desert places, and they came to him from every side. NIV 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
