NKJV 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. NIV 1 The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. NKJV 2 As it is written in the Prophets: "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You." NIV 2 It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way"-- NKJV 3 "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.' " NIV 3 "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' " NKJV 4 John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. NIV 4 And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. NKJV 5 Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. NIV 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. NKJV 6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. NIV 6 John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. NKJV 7 And he preached, saying, "There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. NIV 7 And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. NKJV 8 I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." NIV 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." NKJV 9 It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. NIV 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. NKJV 10 And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. NIV 10 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. NKJV 11 Then a voice came from heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." NIV 11 And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." NKJV 12 Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. NIV 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, NKJV 13 And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. NIV 13 and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. NKJV 14 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, NIV 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. NKJV 15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." NIV 15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" NKJV 16 And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. NIV 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. NKJV 17 Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men." NIV 17 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." NKJV 18 They immediately left their nets and followed Him. NIV 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. NKJV 19 When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. NIV 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. NKJV 20 And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him. NIV 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. NKJV 21 Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. NIV 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. NKJV 22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. NIV 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. NKJV 23 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, NIV 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, NKJV 24 saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are--the Holy One of God!" NIV 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" NKJV 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!" NIV 25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" NKJV 26 And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him. NIV 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. NKJV 27 Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him." NIV 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." NKJV 28 And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee. NIV 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. NKJV 29 Now as soon as they had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. NIV 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. NKJV 30 But Simon's wife's mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once. NIV 30 Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. NKJV 31 So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them. NIV 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. NKJV 32 At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. NIV 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. NKJV 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. NIV 33 The whole town gathered at the door, NKJV 34 Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him. NIV 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. NKJV 35 Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed. NIV 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. NKJV 36 And Simon and those who were with Him searched for Him. NIV 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, NKJV 37 When they found Him, they said to Him, "Everyone is looking for You." NIV 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!" NKJV 38 But He said to them, "Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because for this purpose I have come forth." NIV 38 Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so I can preach there also. That is why I have come." NKJV 39 And He was preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and casting out demons. NIV 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. NKJV 40 Now a leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him and saying to Him, "If You are willing, You can make me clean." NIV 40 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean." NKJV 41 Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, "I am willing; be cleansed." NIV 41 Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" NKJV 42 As soon as He had spoken, immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed. NIV 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured. NKJV 43 And He strictly warned him and sent him away at once, NIV 43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: NKJV 44 and said to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing those things which Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." NIV 44 "See that you don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them." NKJV 45 However, he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the matter, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter the city, but was outside in deserted places; and they came to Him from every direction. NIV 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
