RHE 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. NIV 1 The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. RHE 2 As it is written in Isaias the prophet: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare the way before thee. NIV 2 It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way"-- RHE 3 A voice of one crying in the desert: Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make straight his paths. NIV 3 "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' " RHE 4 John was in the desert, baptizing and preaching the baptism of penance, unto remission of sins. NIV 4 And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. RHE 5 And there went out to him all the country of Judea and all they of Jerusalem and were baptized by him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. NIV 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. RHE 6 And John was clothed camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins: and he ate locusts and wild honey. NIV 6 John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. RHE 7 And he preached, saying: There cometh after me one mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. NIV 7 And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. RHE 8 I have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. NIV 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." RHE 9 And it came to pass, in those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in Jordan. NIV 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. RHE 10 And forthwith coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens open and the Spirit as a dove descending and remaining on him. NIV 10 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. RHE 11 And there came a voice from heaven: Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. NIV 11 And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." RHE 12 And immediately the Spirit drove him out into the desert. NIV 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, RHE 13 And he was in the desert forty days and forty nights, and was tempted by Satan. And he was with beasts: and the angels ministered to him. NIV 13 and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. RHE 14 And after that John was delivered up, Jesus came in Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, NIV 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. RHE 15 And saying: The time is accomplished and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the gospel: NIV 15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" RHE 16 And passing by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother, casting nets into the sea for they were fishermen. NIV 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. RHE 17 And Jesus said to them: Come after me; and I will make you to become fishers of men. NIV 17 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." RHE 18 And immediately leaving their nets, they followed him. NIV 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. RHE 19 And going on from thence a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who also were mending their nets in the ship: NIV 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. RHE 20 And forthwith he called them. And leaving their father Zebedee in the ship with his hired men, they followed him. NIV 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. RHE 21 And they entered into Capharnaum: and forthwith upon the sabbath days going into the synagogue, he taught them. NIV 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. RHE 22 And they were astonished at his doctrine. For he was teaching them as one having power, and not as the scribes. NIV 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. RHE 23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, NIV 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, RHE 24 Saying: What have we to do with thee, Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know who thou art, the Holy One of God. NIV 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" RHE 25 And Jesus threatened him, saying: Speak no more, and go out of the man. NIV 25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" RHE 26 And the unclean spirit, tearing him and crying out with a loud voice, went out of him. NIV 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. RHE 27 And they were all amazed insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying: What thing is this? What is this new doctrine? For with power he commandeth even the unclean spirits: and they obey him. NIV 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." RHE 28 And the fame of him was spread forthwith into all the country of Galilee. NIV 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. RHE 29 And immediately going out of the synagogue they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. NIV 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. RHE 30 And Simon’s wife’s mother lay in a fit of a fever: and forthwith they tell him of her. NIV 30 Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. RHE 31 And coming to her, he lifted her up, taking her by the hand; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them. NIV 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. RHE 32 And when it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all that were ill and that were possessed with devils. NIV 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. RHE 33 And all the city was gathered together at the door. NIV 33 The whole town gathered at the door, RHE 34 And he healed many that were troubled with divers diseases. And he cast out many devils: and he suffered them not to speak, because they knew him. NIV 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. RHE 35 And rising very early, going out, he went into a desert place: and there he prayed. NIV 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. RHE 36 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. NIV 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, RHE 37 And when they had found him, they said to him: All seek for thee. NIV 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!" RHE 38 And he saith to them: Let us go into the neighbouring towns and cities, that I may preach there also; for to this purpose am I come. NIV 38 Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so I can preach there also. That is why I have come." RHE 39 And he was preaching in their synagogues and in all Galilee and casting out devils. NIV 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. RHE 40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him and kneeling down, said to him: If thou wilt thou canst make me clean. NIV 40 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean." RHE 41 And Jesus, having compassion on him, stretched forth his hand and touching him saith to him: I will. Be thou made clean. NIV 41 Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" RHE 42 And when he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him: and he was made clean. NIV 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured. RHE 43 And he strictly charged him and forthwith sent him away. NIV 43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: RHE 44 And he saith to him: See thou tell no one; but go, shew thyself to the high priest and offer for thy cleansing the things that Moses commanded, for a testimony to them. NIV 44 "See that you don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them." RHE 45 But he being gone out, began to publish and to blaze abroad the word: so that he could not openly go into the city. but was without in desert places. And they flocked to him from all sides. NIV 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
