Mark 10

CSB 1 He set out from there and went to the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Then crowds converged on Him again and, as He usually did, He began teaching them once more. NIV 1 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them. CSB 2 Some Pharisees approached Him to test Him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce [his] wife?" NIV 2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" CSB 3 He replied to them, "What did Moses command you?" NIV 3 "What did Moses command you?" he replied. CSB 4 They said, "Moses permitted us to write divorce papers and send her away." NIV 4 They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away." CSB 5 But Jesus told them, "He wrote this commandment for you because of the hardness of your hearts. NIV 5 "It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. CSB 6 But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. NIV 6 "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' CSB 7 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother [ and be joined to his wife, ] NIV 7 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, CSB 8 and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. NIV 8 and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. CSB 9 Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate." NIV 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." CSB 10 Now in the house the disciples questioned Him again about this matter. NIV 10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. CSB 11 And He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. NIV 11 He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. CSB 12 Also, if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." NIV 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery." CSB 13 Some people were bringing little children to Him so He might touch them, but His disciples rebuked them. NIV 13 People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. CSB 14 When Jesus saw it, He was indignant and said to them, "Let the little children come to Me. Don't stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. NIV 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. CSB 15 I assure you: Whoever does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." NIV 15 I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." CSB 16 After taking them in His arms, He laid His hands on them and blessed them. NIV 16 And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them. CSB 17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" NIV 17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" CSB 18 "Why do you call Me good?" Jesus asked him. "No one is good but One-God. NIV 18 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone. CSB 19 You know the commandments: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother. " NIV 19 You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.' " CSB 20 He said to Him, "Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth." NIV 20 "Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept since I was a boy." CSB 21 Then, looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, "You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me." NIV 21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." CSB 22 But he was stunned at this demand, and he went away grieving, because he had many possessions. NIV 22 At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. CSB 23 Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" NIV 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!" CSB 24 But the disciples were astonished at His words. Again Jesus said to them, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! NIV 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! CSB 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God." NIV 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." CSB 26 So they were even more astonished, saying to one another, "Then who can be saved?" NIV 26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, "Who then can be saved?" CSB 27 Looking at them, Jesus said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God, because all things are possible with God." NIV 27 Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God." CSB 28 Peter began to tell Him, "Look, we have left everything and followed You." NIV 28 Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!" CSB 29 "I assure you," Jesus said, "there is no one who has left house, brothers or sisters, mother or father, children, or fields because of Me and the gospel, NIV 29 "I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel CSB 30 who will not receive 100 times more, now at this time-houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions-and eternal life in the age to come. NIV 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields--and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. CSB 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first." NIV 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first." CSB 32 They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. They were astonished, but those who followed Him were afraid. Taking the Twelve aside again, He began to tell them the things that would happen to Him. NIV 32 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. CSB 33 "Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn Him to death. Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles, NIV 33 "We are going up to Jerusalem," he said, "and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, CSB 34 and they will mock Him, spit on Him, flog Him, and kill Him, and He will rise after three days." NIV 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise." CSB 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Him and said, "Teacher, we want You to do something for us if we ask You." NIV 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do for us whatever we ask." CSB 36 "What do you want Me to do for you?" He asked them. NIV 36 "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked. CSB 37 They answered Him, "Allow us to sit at Your right and at Your left in Your glory." NIV 37 They replied, "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory." CSB 38 But Jesus said to them, "You don't know what you're asking. Are you able to drink the cup I drink or to be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?" NIV 38 "You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?" CSB 39 "We are able," they told Him. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with. NIV 39 "We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, CSB 40 But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to give; instead, it is for those it has been prepared for." NIV 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared." CSB 41 When the [other] 10 [disciples] heard this, they began to be indignant with James and John. NIV 41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. CSB 42 Jesus called them over and said to them, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and their men of high positions exercise power over them. NIV 42 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. CSB 43 But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, NIV 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, CSB 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave to all. NIV 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. CSB 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life-a ransom for many." NIV 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." CSB 46 They came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, Bartimaeus (the son of Timaeus), a blind beggar, was sitting by the road. NIV 46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging. CSB 47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, "Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on me!" NIV 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" CSB 48 Many people told him to keep quiet, but he was crying out all the more, "Have mercy on me, Son of David!" NIV 48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" CSB 49 Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called the blind man and said to him, "Have courage! Get up; He's calling for you." NIV 49 Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! On your feet! He's calling you." CSB 50 He threw off his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus. NIV 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. CSB 51 Then Jesus answered him, "What do you want Me to do for you?" "Rabbouni," the blind man told Him, "I want to see!" NIV 51 "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to see." CSB 52 "Go your way," Jesus told him. "Your faith has healed you." Immediately he could see and began to follow Him on the road. NIV 52 "Go," said Jesus, "your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.
