Mark 13

ESV 1 And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!" NIV 1 As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!" ESV 2 And Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down." NIV 2 "Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down." ESV 3 And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, NIV 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, ESV 4 "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?" NIV 4 "Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?" ESV 5 And Jesus began to say to them, "See that no one leads you astray. NIV 5 Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you. ESV 6 Many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray. NIV 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many. ESV 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. NIV 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. ESV 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains. NIV 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. ESV 9 "But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them. NIV 9 "You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. ESV 10 And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. NIV 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. ESV 11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. NIV 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. ESV 12 And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. NIV 12 "Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. ESV 13 And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. NIV 13 All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. ESV 14 "But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. NIV 14 "When you see 'the abomination that causes desolation' standing where it does not belong--let the reader understand--then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. ESV 15 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out, NIV 15 Let no one on the roof of his house go down or enter the house to take anything out. ESV 16 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. NIV 16 Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. ESV 17 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! NIV 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! ESV 18 Pray that it may not happen in winter. NIV 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, ESV 19 For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be. NIV 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now--and never to be equaled again. ESV 20 And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days. NIV 20 If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. ESV 21 And then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it. NIV 21 At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ !' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it. ESV 22 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. NIV 22 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect--if that were possible. ESV 23 But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand. NIV 23 So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time. ESV 24 "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, NIV 24 "But in those days, following that distress, " 'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; ESV 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. NIV 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.' ESV 26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. NIV 26 "At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. ESV 27 And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. NIV 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. ESV 28 "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. NIV 28 "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. ESV 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. NIV 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. ESV 30 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. NIV 30 I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. ESV 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. NIV 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. ESV 32 "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. NIV 32 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. ESV 33 Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. NIV 33 Be on guard! Be alert ! You do not know when that time will come. ESV 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. NIV 34 It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. ESV 35 Therefore stay awake--for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning-- NIV 35 "Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back--whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. ESV 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. NIV 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. ESV 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake." NIV 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!' "
