CSB 1 As soon as it was morning, the chief priests had a meeting with the elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin. After tying Jesus up, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate. NIV 1 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. CSB 2 So Pilate asked Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You have said it." NIV 2 "Are you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. CSB 3 And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. NIV 3 The chief priests accused him of many things. CSB 4 Then Pilate questioned Him again, "Are You not answering anything? Look how many things they are accusing You of!" NIV 4 So again Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of." CSB 5 But Jesus still did not answer anything, so Pilate was amazed. NIV 5 But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. CSB 6 At the festival it was Pilate's custom to release for the people a prisoner they requested. NIV 6 Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested. CSB 7 There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder during the rebellion. NIV 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. CSB 9 So Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?" NIV 9 "Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate, CSB 10 For he knew it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed Him over. NIV 10 knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. CSB 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead. NIV 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. CSB 12 Pilate asked them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?" NIV 12 "What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?" Pilate asked them. CSB 13 Again they shouted, "Crucify Him!" NIV 13 "Crucify him!" they shouted. CSB 14 Then Pilate said to them, "Why? What has He done wrong?" But they shouted, "Crucify Him!" all the more. NIV 14 "Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!" CSB 15 Then, willing to gratify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. And after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified. NIV 15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. CSB 16 Then the soldiers led Him away into the courtyard (that is, headquarters) and called the whole company together. NIV 16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. CSB 17 They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on Him. NIV 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. CSB 18 And they began to salute Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" NIV 18 And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" CSB 19 They kept hitting Him on the head with a reed and spitting on Him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying Him homage. NIV 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. CSB 20 When they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the purple robe, put His clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him. NIV 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. CSB 21 They forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus' cross. He was Simon, a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus. NIV 21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. CSB 22 And they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Skull Place). NIV 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). CSB 23 They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it. NIV 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. CSB 24 Then they crucified Him and divided His clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get. NIV 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. CSB 25 Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified Him. NIV 25 It was the third hour when they crucified him. CSB 26 The inscription of the charge written against Him was THE KING OF THE JEWS NIV 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews. CSB 27 They crucified two criminals with Him, one on His right and one on His left. [ NIV 27 They crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left. The One who would demolish the sanctuary and build it in three days, NIV 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, CSB 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!" NIV 30 come down from the cross and save yourself !" CSB 31 In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking Him to one another and saying, "He saved others; He cannot save Himself! NIV 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself ! CSB 32 Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe." Even those who were crucified with Him were taunting Him. NIV 32 Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. CSB 33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. NIV 33 At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. CSB 34 And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, " Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni ?" which is translated, " My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? " NIV 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ""Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? ""--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" CSB 35 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "Look, He's calling for Elijah!" NIV 35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen, he's calling Elijah." CSB 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a reed, offered Him a drink, and said, "Let's see if Elijah comes to take Him down!" NIV 36 One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said. CSB 37 But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last. NIV 37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. CSB 38 Then the curtain of the sanctuary was split in two from top to bottom. NIV 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. CSB 39 When the centurion, who was standing opposite Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "This man really was God's Son!" NIV 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, "Surely this man was the Son of God!" CSB 40 There were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. NIV 40 Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. Then he placed Him in a tomb cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. NIV 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. CSB 47 Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where He was placed. NIV 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
