Mark 15

NKJV 1 Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate. NIV 1 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. NKJV 2 Then Pilate asked Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" He answered and said to him, "It is as you say." NIV 2 "Are you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. NKJV 3 And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing. NIV 3 The chief priests accused him of many things. NKJV 4 Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, "Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!" NIV 4 So again Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of." NKJV 5 But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled. NIV 5 But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. NKJV 6 Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested. NIV 6 Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested. NKJV 7 And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion. NIV 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. NKJV 8 Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them. NIV 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. NKJV 9 But Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" NIV 9 "Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate, NKJV 10 For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. NIV 10 knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. NKJV 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them. NIV 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. NKJV 12 Pilate answered and said to them again, "What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?" NIV 12 "What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?" Pilate asked them. NKJV 13 So they cried out again, "Crucify Him!" NIV 13 "Crucify him!" they shouted. NKJV 14 Then Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they cried out all the more, "Crucify Him!" NIV 14 "Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!" NKJV 15 So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified. NIV 15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. NKJV 16 Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison. NIV 16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. NKJV 17 And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, NIV 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. NKJV 18 and began to salute Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" NIV 18 And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" NKJV 19 Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him. NIV 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. NKJV 20 And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him. NIV 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. NKJV 21 Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross. NIV 21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. NKJV 22 And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. NIV 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). NKJV 23 Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it. NIV 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. NKJV 24 And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take. NIV 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. NKJV 25 Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him. NIV 25 It was the third hour when they crucified him. NKJV 26 And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS. NIV 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews. NKJV 27 With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. NIV 27 They crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left. NKJV 28 So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And He was numbered with the transgressors." NKJV 29 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, "Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, NIV 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, NKJV 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!" NIV 30 come down from the cross and save yourself !" NKJV 31 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, "He saved others; Himself He cannot save. NIV 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself ! NKJV 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him. NIV 32 Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. NKJV 33 Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. NIV 33 At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. NKJV 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" NIV 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ""Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? ""--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" NKJV 35 Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, "Look, He is calling for Elijah!" NIV 35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen, he's calling Elijah." NKJV 36 Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, "Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down." NIV 36 One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said. NKJV 37 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last. NIV 37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. NKJV 38 Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. NIV 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. NKJV 39 So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, "Truly this Man was the Son of God!" NIV 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, "Surely this man was the Son of God!" NKJV 40 There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, NIV 40 Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. NKJV 41 who also followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem. NIV 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there. NKJV 42 Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, NIV 42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, NKJV 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. NIV 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. NKJV 44 Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. NIV 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. NKJV 45 So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. NIV 45 When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. NKJV 46 Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. NIV 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. NKJV 47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid. NIV 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
