Mark 1:21-34

NRS 21 They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. NIV 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. NRS 22 They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. NIV 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. NRS 23 Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, NIV 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, NRS 24 and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." NIV 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" NRS 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" NIV 25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" NRS 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. NIV 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. NRS 27 They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, "What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." NIV 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." NRS 28 At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. NIV 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. NRS 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. NIV 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. NRS 30 Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. NIV 30 Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. NRS 31 He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. NIV 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. NRS 32 That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. NIV 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. NRS 33 And the whole city was gathered around the door. NIV 33 The whole town gathered at the door, NRS 34 And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. NIV 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
