Mark 8:26-36

NRS 26 Then he sent him away to his home, saying, "Do not even go into the village." NIV 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, "Don't go into the village. " NRS 27 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" NIV 27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, "Who do people say I am?" NRS 28 And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." NIV 28 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." NRS 29 He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." NIV 29 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ. " NRS 30 And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. NIV 30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. NRS 31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. NIV 31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. NRS 32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. NIV 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. NRS 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." NIV 33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." NRS 34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. NIV 34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. NRS 35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. NIV 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. NRS 36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? NIV 36 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?
