And David begat Solomon of her [that had been the wife] of Uriah; NIV 6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife, ASV 7 and Solomon begat Rehoboam; and Rehoboam begat Abijah; and Abijah begat Asa; NIV 7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, ASV 8 and Asa begat Jehoshaphat; and Jehoshaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Uzziah; NIV 8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah, ASV 9 and Uzziah begat Jotham; and Jotham begat Ahaz; and Ahaz begat Hezekiah; NIV 9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, ASV 10 and Hezekiah begat Manasseh; and Manasseh begat Amon; and Amon begat Josiah; NIV 10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah, ASV 11 and Josiah begat Jechoniah and his brethren, at the time of the carrying away to Babylon. NIV 11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon. ASV 12 And after the carrying away to Babylon, Jechoniah begat Shealtiel; and Shealtiel begat Zerubbabel; NIV 12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, ASV 13 and Zerubbabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; NIV 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, ASV 14 and Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; NIV 14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud, ASV 15 and Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; NIV 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, ASV 16 and Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. NIV 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. ASV 17 So all the generations from Abraham unto David are fourteen generations; and from David unto the carrying away to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon unto the Christ fourteen generations. NIV 17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ. ASV 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. NIV 18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. ASV 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. NIV 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. ASV 20 But when he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. NIV 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. ASV 21 And she shall bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name JESUS; for it is he that shall save his people from their sins. NIV 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." ASV 22 Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, NIV 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ASV 23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, And they shall call his name Immanuel; which is, being interpreted, God with us. NIV 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us." ASV 24 And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took unto him his wife; NIV 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. ASV 25 and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he called his name JESUS. NIV 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
