RSV 12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoni'ah was the father of She-al'ti-el, and She-al'ti-el the father of Zerub'babel, NIV 12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, RSV 13 and Zerub'babel the father of Abi'ud, and Abi'ud the father of Eli'akim, and Eli'akim the father of Azor, NIV 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, RSV 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eli'ud, NIV 14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud, RSV 15 and Eli'ud the father of Elea'zar, and Elea'zar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, NIV 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, RSV 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. RSV 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. NIV 17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ. RSV 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; NIV 18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. RSV 19 and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. NIV 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. RSV 20 But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; NIV 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. RSV 21 she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." NIV 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." RSV 22 All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: NIV 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: RSV 23 "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us). NIV 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us." RSV 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, NIV 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. RSV 25 but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus. NIV 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
