Matthew 11

NAS 1 When Jesus had finished giving instructions to His twelve disciples, He departed from there to teach and preach in their cities. NIV 1 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee. NAS 2 Now when John, while imprisoned, heard of the works of Christ, he sent word by his disciples NIV 2 When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples NAS 3 and said to Him, "Are You the Expected One, or shall we look for someone else?" NIV 3 to ask him, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?" NAS 4 Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you hear and see: NIV 4 Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see: NAS 5 the BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM. NIV 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. NAS 6 "And blessed is he who does not take offense at Me." NIV 6 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me." NAS 7 As these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? NIV 7 As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? NAS 8 "But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings' palaces! NIV 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces. NAS 9 "But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet. NIV 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. NAS 10 "This is the one about whom it is written, 'BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.' NIV 10 This is the one about whom it is written: " 'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' NAS 11 "Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. NIV 11 I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. NAS 12 "From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force. NIV 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it. NAS 13 "For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John. NIV 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. NAS 14 "And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come. NIV 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. NAS 15 "He who has ears to hear, let him hear. NIV 15 He who has ears, let him hear. NAS 16 "But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places, who call out to the other children, NIV 16 "To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others: NAS 17 and say, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.' NIV 17 " 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.' NAS 18 "For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon!' NIV 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.' NAS 19 "The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds." NIV 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners." ' But wisdom is proved right by her actions." NAS 20 Then He began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent. NIV 20 Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. NAS 21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. NIV 21 "Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. NAS 22 "Nevertheless I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. NIV 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. NAS 23 "And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will descend to Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day. NIV 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. NAS 24 "Nevertheless I say to you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you." NIV 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you." NAS 25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. NIV 25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. NAS 26 "Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. NIV 26 Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. NAS 27 "All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. NIV 27 "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. NAS 28 "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. NIV 28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. NAS 29 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. NIV 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. NAS 30 "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." NIV 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
