Matthew 12

CJB 1 One Shabbat during that time, Yeshua was walking through some wheat fields. His talmidim were hungry, so they began picking heads of grain and eating them. NIV 1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. CJB 2 On seeing this, the P'rushim said to him, "Look! Your talmidim are violating Shabbat!" NIV 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath." CJB 3 But he said to them, "Haven't you ever read what David did when he and those with him were hungry? NIV 3 He answered, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? CJB 4 He entered the House of God and ate the Bread of the Presence!" -- which was prohibited, both to him and to his companions; it is permitted only to the cohanim. NIV 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread--which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. CJB 5 "Or haven't you read in the Torah that on Shabbat the cohanim profane Shabbat and yet are blameless? NIV 5 Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? CJB 6 I tell you, there is in this place something greater than the Temple! NIV 6 I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. CJB 7 If you knew what `I want compassion rather than animal-sacrifice' meant, you would not condemn the innocent. NIV 7 If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent. CJB 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of Shabbat!" NIV 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." CJB 9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue. NIV 9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, CJB 10 A man there had a shriveled hand. Looking for a reason to accuse him of something, they asked him, "Is healing permitted on Shabbat?" NIV 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" CJB 11 But he answered, "If you have a sheep that falls in a pit on Shabbat, which of you won't take hold of it and lift it out? NIV 11 He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? CJB 12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore, what is permitted on Shabbat is to do good." Then to the man he said, "Hold out your hand." As he held it out, it NIV 12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." CJB 13 became restored, as sound as the other one. NIV 13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. CJB 14 But the P'rushim went out and began plotting how they might do away with Yeshua. NIV 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus. CJB 15 Aware of this, he left that area. Many people followed him; and he healed them all NIV 15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick, CJB 16 but warned them not to make him known. NIV 16 warning them not to tell who he was. CJB 17 This was to fulfill what had been spoken through Yesha`yahu the prophet, NIV 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: CJB 18 "Here is my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will announce justice to the Gentiles. NIV 18 "Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. CJB 19 He will not fight or shout, no one will hear his voice in the streets; NIV 19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. CJB 20 he will not snap off a broken reed or snuff out a smoldering wick until he has brought justice through to victory. NIV 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory. CJB 21 In him the Gentiles will put their hope." NIV 21 In his name the nations will put their hope." CJB 22 Then some people brought him a man controlled by demons who was blind and mute; and Yeshua healed him, so that he could both speak and see. NIV 22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. CJB 23 The crowds were astounded and asked, "This couldn't be the Son of David, could it?" NIV 23 All the people were astonished and said, "Could this be the Son of David?" CJB 24 But when the P'rushim heard of it, they said, "It is only by Ba`al-Zibbul" -- the ruler of the demons -- "that this man drives out demons." NIV 24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons." CJB 25 However, knowing what they were thinking, Yeshua said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not survive. NIV 25 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. CJB 26 If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself; so how can his kingdom survive? NIV 26 If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? CJB 27 Besides, if I drive out demons by Ba`al-Zibbul, by whom do your people drive them out? So, they will be your judges! NIV 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. CJB 28 But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you! NIV 28 But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. CJB 29 "Or again, how can someone break into a strong man's house and make off with his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? After that he can ransack his house. NIV 29 "Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house. CJB 30 "Those who are not with me are against me, and those who do not gather with me are scattering. NIV 30 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. CJB 31 Because of this, I tell you that people will be forgiven any sin and blasphemy, but blaspheming the Ruach HaKodesh will not be forgiven. NIV 31 And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. CJB 32 One can say something against the Son of Man and be forgiven; but whoever keeps on speaking against the Ruach HaKodesh will never be forgiven, neither in the `olam hazeh nor in the `olam haba. NIV 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. CJB 33 "If you make a tree good, its fruit will be good; and if you make a tree bad, its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. NIV 33 "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. CJB 34 You snakes! How can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what overflows from the heart. NIV 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. CJB 35 The good person brings forth good things from his store of good, and the evil person brings forth evil things from his store of evil. NIV 35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. CJB 36 Moreover, I tell you this: on the Day of Judgment people will have to give account for every careless word they have spoken; NIV 36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. CJB 37 for by your own words you will be acquitted, and by your own words you will be condemned." NIV 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." CJB 38 At this some of the Torah-teachers said, "Rabbi, we want to see a miraculous sign from you." NIV 38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you." CJB 39 He replied, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign? No! None will be given to it but the sign of the prophet Yonah. NIV 39 He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. CJB 40 For just as Yonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea-monster,f so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the depths of the earth. NIV 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. CJB 41 The people of Ninveh will stand up at the Judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they turned from their sins to God when Yonah preached, but what is here now is greater than Yonah. NIV 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. CJB 42 The Queen of the South will stand up at the Judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Shlomo, but what is here now is greater than Shlomo. NIV 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here. CJB 43 "When an unclean spirit comes out of a person, it travels through dry country seeking rest and does not find it. NIV 43 "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. CJB 44 Then it says to itself, `I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house standing empty, swept clean and put in order. NIV 44 Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. CJB 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they come and live there -- so that in the end, the person is worse off than he was before. This is how it will be for this wicked generation." NIV 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation." CJB 46 He was still speaking to the crowd when his mother and brothers appeared outside, asking to talk with him. NIV 46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. CJB 47 NIV 47 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you." CJB 48 But to the one who had informed him he replied, "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" NIV 48 He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" CJB 49 Pointing to his talmidim, he said, "Look! Here are my mother and my brothers! NIV 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. CJB 50 Whoever does what my Father in heaven wants, that person is my brother and sister and mother." NIV 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."
