Matthew 12

YLT 1 At that time did Jesus go on the sabbaths through the corn, and his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck ears, and to eat, NIV 1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. YLT 2 and the Pharisees having seen, said to him, `Lo, thy disciples do that which it is not lawful to do on a sabbath.' NIV 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath." YLT 3 And he said to them, `Did ye not read what David did, when he was hungry, himself and those with him -- NIV 3 He answered, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? YLT 4 how he went into the house of God, and the loaves of the presentation did eat, which it is not lawful to him to eat, nor to those with him, except to the priests alone? NIV 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread--which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. YLT 5 `Or did ye not read in the Law, that on the sabbaths the priests in the temple do profane the sabbath, and are blameless? NIV 5 Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? YLT 6 and I say to you, that a greater than the temple is here; NIV 6 I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. YLT 7 and if ye had known what is: Kindness I will, and not sacrifice -- ye had not condemned the blameless, NIV 7 If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent. YLT 8 for the son of man is lord even of the sabbath.' NIV 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." YLT 9 And having departed thence, he went to their synagogue, NIV 9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, YLT 10 and lo, there was a man having the hand withered, and they questioned him, saying, `Is it lawful to heal on the sabbaths?' that they might accuse him. NIV 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" YLT 11 And he said to them, `What man shall be of you, who shall have one sheep, and if this may fall on the sabbaths into a ditch, will not lay hold on it and raise [it]? NIV 11 He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? YLT 12 How much better, therefore, is a man than a sheep? -- so that it is lawful on the sabbaths to do good.' NIV 12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." YLT 13 Then saith he to the man, `Stretch forth thy hand,' and he stretched [it] forth, and it was restored whole as the other. NIV 13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. YLT 14 And the Pharisees having gone forth, held a consultation against him, how they might destroy him, NIV 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus. YLT 15 and Jesus having known, withdrew thence, and there followed him great multitudes, and he healed them all, NIV 15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick, YLT 16 and did charge them that they might not make him manifest, NIV 16 warning them not to tell who he was. YLT 17 that it might be fulfilled that was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying, NIV 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: YLT 18 `Lo, My servant, whom I did choose, My beloved, in whom My soul did delight, I will put My Spirit upon him, and judgment to the nations he shall declare, NIV 18 "Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. YLT 19 he shall not strive nor cry, nor shall any hear in the broad places his voice, NIV 19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. YLT 20 a bruised reed he shall not break, and smoking flax he shall not quench, till he may put forth judgment to victory, NIV 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory. YLT 21 and in his name shall nations hope.' NIV 21 In his name the nations will put their hope." YLT 22 Then was brought to him a demoniac, blind and dumb, and he healed him, so that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. NIV 22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. YLT 23 And all the multitudes were amazed, and said, `Is this the Son of David?' NIV 23 All the people were astonished and said, "Could this be the Son of David?" YLT 24 but the Pharisees having heard, said, `This one doth not cast out demons, except by Beelzeboul, ruler of the demons.' NIV 24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons." YLT 25 And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said to them, `Every kingdom having been divided against itself is desolated, and no city or house having been divided against itself, doth stand, NIV 25 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. YLT 26 and if the Adversary doth cast out the Adversary, against himself he was divided, how then doth his kingdom stand? NIV 26 If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? YLT 27 `And if I, by Beelzeboul, do cast out the demons, your sons -- by whom do they cast out? because of this they -- they shall be your judges. NIV 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. YLT 28 `But if I, by the Spirit of God, do cast out the demons, then come already unto you did the reign of God. NIV 28 But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. YLT 29 `Or how is one able to go into the house of the strong man, and to plunder his goods, if first he may not bind the strong man? and then his house he will plunder. NIV 29 "Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house. YLT 30 `He who is not with me is against me, and he who is not gathering with me, doth scatter. NIV 30 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. YLT 31 Because of this I say to you, all sin and evil speaking shall be forgiven to men, but the evil speaking of the Spirit shall not be forgiven to men. NIV 31 And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. YLT 32 And whoever may speak a word against the Son of Man it shall be forgiven to him, but whoever may speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this age, nor in that which is coming. NIV 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. YLT 33 `Either make the tree good, and its fruit good, or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad, for from the fruit is the tree known. NIV 33 "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. YLT 34 `Brood of vipers! how are ye able to speak good things -- being evil? for out of the abundance of the heart doth the mouth speak. NIV 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. YLT 35 The good man out of the good treasure of the heart doth put forth the good things, and the evil man out of the evil treasure doth put forth evil things. NIV 35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. YLT 36 `And I say to you, that every idle word that men may speak, they shall give for it a reckoning in a day of judgment; NIV 36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. YLT 37 for from thy words thou shalt be declared righteous, and from thy words thou shalt be declared unrighteous.' NIV 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." YLT 38 Then answered certain of the scribes and Pharisees, saying, `Teacher, we will to see a sign from thee.' NIV 38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you." YLT 39 And he answering said to them, `A generation, evil and adulterous, doth seek a sign, and a sign shall not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet; NIV 39 He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. YLT 40 for, as Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights, so shall the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. NIV 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. YLT 41 `Men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it, for they reformed at the proclamation of Jonah, and lo, a greater than Jonah here! NIV 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. YLT 42 `A queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and lo, a greater than Solomon here! NIV 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here. YLT 43 `And, when the unclean spirit may go forth from the man, it doth walk through dry places seeking rest, and doth not find; NIV 43 "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. YLT 44 then it saith, I will turn back to my house whence I came forth; and having come, it findeth [it] unoccupied, swept, and adorned: NIV 44 Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. YLT 45 then doth it go, and take with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself, and having gone in they dwell there, and the last of that man doth become worse than the first; so shall it be also to this evil generation.' NIV 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation." YLT 46 And while he was yet speaking to the multitudes, lo, his mother and brethren had stood without, seeking to speak to him, NIV 46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. YLT 47 and one said to him, `Lo, thy mother and thy brethren do stand without, seeking to speak to thee.' NIV 47 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you." YLT 48 And he answering said to him who spake to him, `Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?' NIV 48 He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" YLT 49 And having stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, he said, `Lo, my mother and my brethren! NIV 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. YLT 50 for whoever may do the will of my Father who is in the heavens, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.' NIV 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."
