Matthew 14

KJV 1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, NIV 1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, KJV 2 And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. NIV 2 and he said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him." KJV 3 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. NIV 3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, KJV 4 For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. NIV 4 for John had been saying to him: "It is not lawful for you to have her." KJV 5 And when he would have put him to death , he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. NIV 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered him a prophet. KJV 6 But when Herod's birthday was kept , the daughter of Herodias danced before them , and pleased Herod. NIV 6 On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much KJV 7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask . NIV 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. KJV 8 And she, being before instructed of her mother, said , Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. NIV 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." KJV 9 And the king was sorry : nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat , he commanded it to be given her. NIV 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted KJV 10 And he sent , and beheaded John in the prison. NIV 10 and had John beheaded in the prison. KJV 11 And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. NIV 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. KJV 12 And his disciples came , and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. NIV 12 John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus. KJV 13 When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart : and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities. NIV 13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. KJV 14 And Jesus went forth , and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. NIV 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. KJV 15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying , This is a desert place, and the time is now past ; send the multitude away , that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. NIV 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food." KJV 16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart ; give ye them to eat . NIV 16 Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat." KJV 17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. NIV 17 "We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered. KJV 18 He said , Bring them hither to me. NIV 18 "Bring them here to me," he said. KJV 19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed , and brake , and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. NIV 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. KJV 20 And they did all eat , and were filled : and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. NIV 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. KJV 21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children. NIV 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. KJV 22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away . NIV 22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. KJV 23 And when he had sent the multitudes away , he went up into a mountain apart to pray : and when the evening was come , he was there alone. NIV 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, KJV 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. NIV 24 but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. KJV 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. NIV 25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. KJV 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled , saying , It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. NIV 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. KJV 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying , Be of good cheer ; it is I; be not afraid . NIV 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." KJV 28 And Peter answered him and said , Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. NIV 28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." KJV 29 And he said , Come . And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. NIV 29 "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. KJV 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid ; and beginning to sink , he cried , saying , Lord, save me. NIV 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" KJV 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt ? NIV 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" KJV 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased . NIV 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. KJV 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying , Of a truth thou art the Son of God. NIV 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." KJV 34 And when they were gone over , they came into the land of Gennesaret. NIV 34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. KJV 35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased; NIV 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him KJV 36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole . NIV 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
