Matthew 14

WEB 1 At that time, Herod, the tetrarch, heard the report concerning Jesus, NIV 1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, WEB 2 and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him." NIV 2 and he said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him." WEB 3 For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. NIV 3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, WEB 4 For John said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." NIV 4 for John had been saying to him: "It is not lawful for you to have her." WEB 5 When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. NIV 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered him a prophet. WEB 6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod. NIV 6 On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much WEB 7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask. NIV 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. WEB 8 She, being put forward by her mother, said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer." WEB 9 The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths, and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given, NIV 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted WEB 10 and he sent and beheaded John in the prison. NIV 10 and had John beheaded in the prison. WEB 11 His head was brought on a platter, and given to the young lady: and she brought it to her mother. NIV 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. WEB 12 His disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it; and they went and told Jesus. NIV 12 John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus. WEB 13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat, to a desert place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities. NIV 13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. WEB 14 Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick. NIV 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. WEB 15 When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, "The place is a desert, and the time is already past. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food." NIV 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food." WEB 16 But Jesus said to them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat." NIV 16 Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat." WEB 17 They told him, "We only have here five loaves and two fish." NIV 17 "We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered. WEB 18 He said, "Bring them here to me." NIV 18 "Bring them here to me," he said. WEB 19 He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes. NIV 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. WEB 20 They all ate, and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces. NIV 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. WEB 21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. NIV 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. WEB 22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. WEB 23 After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone. When evening came, he was there alone, WEB 24 But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. NIV 24 but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. WEB 25 In the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. NIV 25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. WEB 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out for fear. NIV 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. WEB 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying "Cheer up! I AM! Don't be afraid." NIV 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." WEB 28 Peter answered him and said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters." NIV 28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." WEB 29 He said, "Come!" Peter went down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus. NIV 29 "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. WEB 30 But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" NIV 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" WEB 31 Immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" NIV 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" WEB 32 When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased. NIV 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. WEB 33 Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, "You are truly the Son of God!" NIV 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." WEB 34 When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. NIV 34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. WEB 35 When the men of that place recognized him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought to him all who were sick, NIV 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him WEB 36 and they begged him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole. NIV 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
