For they do not wash their hands when they eat." NIV 2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!" RSV 3 He answered them, "And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? NIV 3 Jesus replied, "And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? RSV 4 For God commanded, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die.' NIV 4 For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.' RSV 5 But you say, 'If any one tells his father or his mother, What you would have gained from me is given to God, he need not honor his father.' NIV 5 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,' RSV 6 So, for the sake of your tradition, you have made void the word of God. NIV 6 he is not to 'honor his father ' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. RSV 7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: NIV 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: RSV 8 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; NIV 8 " 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. RSV 9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.'" NIV 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'" RSV 10 And he called the people to him and said to them, "Hear and understand: NIV 10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. RSV 11 not what goes into the mouth defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man." NIV 11 What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.' " RSV 12 Then the disciples came and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?" NIV 12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?" RSV 13 He answered, "Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. NIV 13 He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. RSV 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit." NIV 14 Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit." RSV 15 But Peter said to him, "Explain the parable to us." NIV 15 Peter said, "Explain the parable to us." RSV 16 And he said, "Are you also still without understanding? NIV 16 "Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them. RSV 17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and so passes on? NIV 17 "Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? RSV 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a man. NIV 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' RSV 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. NIV 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. RSV 20 These are what defile a man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man." NIV 20 These are what make a man 'unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him 'unclean.' "
