Matthew 16

NRS 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test Jesus they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. NIV 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. NRS 2 He answered them, "When it is evening, you say, "It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' NIV 2 He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' NRS 3 And in the morning, "It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. NIV 3 and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." NRS 7 They said to one another, "It is because we have brought no bread." NIV 7 They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread." NRS 8 And becoming aware of it, Jesus said, "You of little faith, why are you talking about having no bread? NIV 8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? NRS 9 Do you still not perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? NIV 9 Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? NRS 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? NIV 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? NRS 11 How could you fail to perceive that I was not speaking about bread? Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!" NIV 11 How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." NRS 12 Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. NRS 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" NIV 15 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" NRS 16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." NIV 16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." NRS 17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. NIV 17 Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. NRS 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. NIV 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. NRS 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." NIV 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." NRS 20 Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. NIV 20 Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ. NRS 21 From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. NIV 21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. NRS 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you." NIV 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!" NRS 23 But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." NIV 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." NRS 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. NIV 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. NRS 25 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. NIV 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. NRS 26 For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? NIV 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? NRS 27 "For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. NIV 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. NRS 28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom." NIV 28 I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
