Matthew 19

RHE 1 And it came to pass when Jesus had ended these words, he departed from Galilee and came into the coasts of Judea, beyond Jordan. NIV 1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. RHE 2 And great multitudes followed him: and he healed them there. NIV 2 Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. RHE 3 And there came to him the Pharisees tempting him, saying: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? NIV 3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?" RHE 4 Who answering, said to them: Have ye not read, that he who made man from the beginning, made them male and female? And he said: NIV 4 "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' RHE 5 For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they two shall be in one flesh. NIV 5 and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh' ? RHE 6 Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder. NIV 6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." RHE 7 They say to him: Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce, and to put away? NIV 7 "Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?" RHE 8 He saith to them: Because Moses by reason of the hardness of your heart permitted you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. NIV 8 Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. RHE 9 And I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that shall marry her that is put away, committeth adultery. NIV 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery." RHE 10 His disciples say unto him: If the case of a man with his wife be so, it is not expedient to marry. NIV 10 The disciples said to him, "If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry." RHE 11 Who said to them: All men take not this word, but they to whom it is given. NIV 11 Jesus replied, "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. RHE 12 For there are eunuchs, who were born so from their mothers womb: and there are eunuchs, who were made so by men: and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. He that can take, let him take it. NIV 12 For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it." RHE 13 Then were little children presented to him, that he should impose hands upon them and pray. And the disciples rebuked them. NIV 13 Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. RHE 14 But Jesus said to them: Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come to me: for the kingdom of heaven is for such. NIV 14 Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." RHE 15 And when he had imposed hands upon them, he departed from thence. NIV 15 When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there. RHE 16 And behold one came and said to him: Good master, what good shall I do that I may have life everlasting? NIV 16 Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" RHE 17 Who said to him: Why askest thou me concerning good? One is good, God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. NIV 17 "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments." RHE 18 He said to him: Which? And Jesus said: Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness. NIV 18 "Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, " 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, RHE 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. NIV 19 honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as yourself.' " RHE 20 The young man saith to him: All these have I kept from my youth, what is yet wanting to me? NIV 20 "All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?" RHE 21 Jesus saith to him: If thou wilt be perfect, go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. NIV 21 Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." RHE 22 And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad: for he had great possessions. NIV 22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. RHE 23 Then Jesus said to his disciples: Amen, I say to you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. NIV 23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. RHE 24 And again I say to you: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. NIV 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." RHE 25 And when they had heard this, the disciples wondered much, saying: Who then can be saved? NIV 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?" RHE 26 And Jesus beholding, said to them: With men this is impossible: but with God all things are possible. NIV 26 Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." RHE 27 Then Peter answering, said to him: Behold we have left all things, and have followed thee: what therefore shall we have? NIV 27 Peter answered him, "We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?" RHE 28 And Jesus said to them: Amen I say to you, that you who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, you also shall sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 28 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. RHE 29 And every one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting. NIV 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. RHE 30 And many that are first, shall be last: and the last shall be first. NIV 30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
