Matthew 19

MSG

1 Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan.
1 When Jesus had completed these teachings, he left Galilee and crossed the region of Judea on the other side of the Jordan.
2 And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
2 Great crowds followed him there, and he healed them.
3 And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?"
3 One day the Pharisees were badgering him: "Is it legal for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?"
4 He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female,
4 He answered, "Haven't you read in your Bible that the Creator originally made man and woman for each other, male and female?
5 and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?
5 And because of this, a man leaves father and mother and is firmly bonded to his wife, becoming one flesh - no longer two bodies but one.
6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."
6 Because God created this organic union of the two sexes, no one should desecrate his art by cutting them apart."
7 They said to him, "Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?"
7 They shot back in rebuttal, "If that's so, why did Moses give instructions for divorce papers and divorce procedures?"
8 He said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
8 Jesus said, "Moses provided for divorce as a concession to your hardheartedness, but it is not part of God's original plan.
9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery."
9 I'm holding you to the original plan, and holding you liable for adultery if you divorce your faithful wife and then marry someone else. I make an exception in cases where the spouse has committed adultery."
10 The disciples said to him, "If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry."
10 Jesus' disciples objected, "If those are the terms of marriage, we're stuck. Why get married?"
11 But he said to them, "Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given.
11 But Jesus said, "Not everyone is mature enough to live a married life. It requires a certain aptitude and grace. Marriage isn't for everyone.
12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it."
12 Some, from birth seemingly, never give marriage a thought. Others never get asked - or accepted. And some decide not to get married for kingdom reasons. But if you're capable of growing into the largeness of marriage, do it."
13 Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people,
13 One day children were brought to Jesus in the hope that he would lay hands on them and pray over them. The disciples shooed them off.
14 but Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven."
14 But Jesus intervened: "Let the children alone, don't prevent them from coming to me. God's kingdom is made up of people like these."
15 And he laid his hands on them and went away.
15 After laying hands on them, he left.
16 And behold, a man came up to him, saying, "Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?"
16 Another day, a man stopped Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?"
17 And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments."
17 Jesus said, "Why do you question me about what's good? God is the One who is good. If you want to enter the life of God, just do what he tells you."
18 He said to him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,
18 The man asked, "What in particular?" Jesus said, "Don't murder, don't commit adultery, don't steal, don't lie,
19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
19 honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as you do yourself."
20 The young man said to him, "All these I have kept. What do I still lack?"
20 The young man said, "I've done all that. What's left?"
21 Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."
21 "If you want to give it all you've got," Jesus replied, "go sell your possessions; give everything to the poor. All your wealth will then be in heaven. Then come follow me."
22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
22 That was the last thing the young man expected to hear. And so, crestfallen, he walked away. He was holding on tight to a lot of things, and he couldn't bear to let go.
23 And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven.
23 As he watched him go, Jesus told his disciples, "Do you have any idea how difficult it is for the rich to enter God's kingdom?
24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God."
24 Let me tell you, it's easier to gallop a camel through a needle's eye than for the rich to enter God's kingdom."
25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?"
25 The disciples were staggered. "Then who has any chance at all?"
26 But Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
26 Jesus looked hard at them and said, "No chance at all if you think you can pull it off yourself. Every chance in the world if you trust God to do it."
27 Then Peter said in reply, "See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?"
27 Then Peter chimed in, "We left everything and followed you. What do we get out of it?"
28 Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
28 Jesus replied, "Yes, you have followed me. In the re-creation of the world, when the Son of Man will rule gloriously, you who have followed me will also rule, starting with the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.
29 And not only you, but anyone who sacrifices home, family, fields - whatever - because of me will get it all back a hundred times over, not to mention the considerable bonus of eternal life.
30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
30 This is the Great Reversal: many of the first ending up last, and the last first.

Matthew 20:1-16

ESV

MSG

1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.
1 "God's kingdom is like an estate manager who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
2 After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
2 They agreed on a wage of a dollar a day, and went to work.
3 And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
3 "Later, about nine o'clock, the manager saw some other men hanging around the town square unemployed.
4 and to them he said, 'You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.'
4 He told them to go to work in his vineyard and he would pay them a fair wage.
5 So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same.
5 They went.
6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, 'Why do you stand here idle all day?'
6 At five o'clock he went back and found still others standing around. He said, 'Why are you standing around all day doing nothing?
7 They said to him, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard too.'
7 ' "They said, 'Because no one hired us.' "He told them to go to work in his vineyard.
8 And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.'
8 "When the day's work was over, the owner of the vineyard instructed his foreman, 'Call the workers in and pay them their wages. Start with the last hired and go on to the first.'
9 And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius.
9 "Those hired at five o'clock came up and were each given a dollar.
10 Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius.
10 When those who were hired first saw that, they assumed they would get far more. But they got the same, each of them one dollar.
11 And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house,
11 Taking the dollar, they groused angrily to the manager,
12 saying, 'These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.'
12 'These last workers put in only one easy hour, and you just made them equal to us, who slaved all day under a scorching sun.'
13 But he replied to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius?
13 "He replied to the one speaking for the rest, 'Friend, I haven't been unfair. We agreed on the wage of a dollar, didn't we?
14 Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you.
14 So take it and go. I decided to give to the one who came last the same as you.
15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?'
15 Can't I do what I want with my own money? Are you going to get stingy because I am generous?'
16 So the last will be first, and the first last."
16 "Here it is again, the Great Reversal: many of the first ending up last, and the last first."
