Matthew 21:18-46

CEBA 18 Early in the morning as Jesus was returning to the city, he was hungry. NIV 18 Early in the morning, as he was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. CEBA 19 He saw a fig tree along the road, but when he came to it, he found nothing except leaves. Then he said to it, "You'll never again bear fruit!" The fig tree dried up at once. NIV 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, "May you never bear fruit again!" Immediately the tree withered. CEBA 20 When the disciples saw it, they were amazed. "How did the fig tree dry up so fast?" they asked. NIV 20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. "How did the fig tree wither so quickly?" they asked. CEBA 21 Jesus responded, "I assure you that if you have faith and don't doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree. You will even say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the lake.' And it will happen. NIV 21 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. CEBA 22 If you have faith, you will receive whatever you pray for." NIV 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." CEBA 23 When Jesus entered the temple, the chief priests and elders of the people came to him as he was teaching. They asked, "What kind of authority do you have for doing these things? Who gave you this authority?" NIV 23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. "By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you this authority?" CEBA 24 Jesus replied, "I have a question for you. If you tell me the answer, I'll tell you what kind of authority I have to do these things. NIV 24 Jesus replied, "I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. CEBA 25 Where did John get his authority to baptize? Did he get it from heaven or from humans?" They argued among themselves, "If we say ‘from heaven,' he'll say to us, ‘Then why didn't you believe him?' NIV 25 John's baptism--where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?" They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' CEBA 26 But we can't say ‘from humans' because we're afraid of the crowd, since everyone thinks John was a prophet." NIV 26 But if we say, 'From men'--we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet." CEBA 27 Then they replied, "We don't know." Jesus also said to them, “Neither will I tell you what kind of authority I have to do these things. NIV 27 So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Then he said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. CEBA 28 “What do you think? A man had two sons. Now he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' NIV 28 "What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.' CEBA 29 “‘No, I don't want to,' he replied. But later he changed his mind and went. NIV 29 " 'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. CEBA 30 “The father said the same thing to the other son, who replied, ‘Yes, sir.' But he didn't go. NIV 30 "Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go. CEBA 31 "Which one of these two did his father's will?" They said, "The first one." Jesus said to them, “I assure you that tax collectors and prostitutes are entering God's kingdom ahead of you. NIV 31 "Which of the two did what his father wanted?" "The first," they answered. Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. CEBA 32 For John came to you on the righteous road, and you didn't believe him. But tax collectors and prostitutes believed him. Yet even after you saw this, you didn't change your hearts and lives and you didn't believe him. NIV 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. CEBA 33 “Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a tower. Then he rented it to tenant farmers and took a trip. NIV 33 "Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. CEBA 34 When it was time for harvest, he sent his servants to the tenant farmers to collect his fruit. NIV 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit. CEBA 35 But the tenant farmers grabbed his servants. They beat some of them, and some of them they killed. Some of them they stoned to death. NIV 35 "The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. CEBA 36 “Again he sent other servants, more than the first group. They treated them in the same way. NIV 36 Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. CEBA 37 Finally he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,' he said. NIV 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. 'They will respect my son,' he said. CEBA 38 “But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come on, let's kill him and we'll have his inheritance.' NIV 38 "But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance.' CEBA 39 They grabbed him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. NIV 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. CEBA 40 "When the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenant farmers?" NIV 40 "Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" CEBA 41 They said, "He will totally destroy those wicked farmers and rent the vineyard to other tenant farmers who will give him the fruit when it's ready." NIV 41 "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end," they replied, "and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time." CEBA 42 Jesus said to them, "Haven't you ever read in the scriptures, The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. The Lord has done this, and it's amazing in our eyes? NIV 42 Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: " 'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes' ? CEBA 43 Therefore, I tell you that God's kingdom will be taken away from you and will be given to a people who produce its fruit. NIV 43 "Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. CEBA 44 Whoever falls on this stone will be crushed. And the stone will crush the person it falls on." NIV 44 He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed." CEBA 45 Now when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard the parable, they knew Jesus was talking about them. NIV 45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus' parables, they knew he was talking about them. CEBA 46 They were trying to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, who thought he was a prophet. NIV 46 They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.
