RSV 18 In the morning, as he was returning to the city, he was hungry. NIV 18 Early in the morning, as he was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. RSV 19 And seeing a fig tree by the wayside he went to it, and found nothing on it but leaves only. And he said to it, "May no fruit ever come from you again!" And the fig tree withered at once. NIV 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, "May you never bear fruit again!" Immediately the tree withered. RSV 20 When the disciples saw it they marveled, saying, "How did the fig tree wither at once?" NIV 20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. "How did the fig tree wither so quickly?" they asked. RSV 21 And Jesus answered them, "Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and never doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the sea,' it will be done. NIV 21 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. RSV 22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith." NIV 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." RSV 23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" "And who gave you this authority?" RSV 24 Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you a question; and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. NIV 24 Jesus replied, "I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. RSV 25 The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven or from men?" And they argued with one another, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' NIV 25 John's baptism--where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?" They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' RSV 26 But if we say, 'From men,' we are afraid of the multitude; for all hold that John was a prophet." NIV 26 But if we say, 'From men'--we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet." RSV 27 So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. NIV 27 So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Then he said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. RSV 28 "What do you think? A man had two sons; and he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' NIV 28 "What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.' RSV 29 And he answered, 'I will not'; but afterward he repented and went. NIV 29 " 'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. RSV 30 And he went to the second and said the same; and he answered, 'I go, sir,' but did not go. NIV 30 "Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go. RSV 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. NIV 31 "Which of the two did what his father wanted?" "The first," they answered. Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. RSV 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him. NIV 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. RSV 33 "Hear another parable. NIV 33 "Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. RSV 34 When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; NIV 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit. RSV 35 and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. NIV 35 "The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. RSV 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. NIV 36 Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. RSV 37 Afterward he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' NIV 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. 'They will respect my son,' he said. RSV 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' NIV 38 "But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance.' RSV 39 And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. NIV 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. RSV 40 When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" NIV 40 "Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" RSV 41 They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." NIV 41 "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end," they replied, "and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time."
