NCV 1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his followers, NIV 1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: NCV 2 "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees have the authority to tell you what the law of Moses says. NIV 2 "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. NCV 3 So you should obey and follow whatever they tell you, but their lives are not good examples for you to follow. They tell you to do things, but they themselves don't do them. NIV 3 So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. NCV 4 They make strict rules and try to force people to obey them, but they are unwilling to help those who struggle under the weight of their rules NIV 4 They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. NCV 5 "They do good things so that other people will see them. They make the boxesn of Scriptures that they wear bigger, and they make their special prayer clothes very long. NIV 5 "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; NCV 6 Those Pharisees and teachers of the law love to have the most important seats at feasts and in the synagogues. NIV 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; NCV 7 They love people to greet them with respect in the marketplaces, and they love to have people call them 'Teacher.' NIV 7 they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them 'Rabbi.' NCV 8 "But you must not be called 'Teacher,' because you have only one Teacher, and you are all brothers and sisters together. NIV 8 "But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. NCV 9 And don't call any person on earth 'Father,' because you have one Father, who is in heaven. NIV 9 And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. NCV 10 And you should not be called 'Master,' because you have only one Master, the Christ. NIV 10 Nor are you to be called 'teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ. NCV 11 Whoever is your servant is the greatest among you. NIV 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. NCV 12 Whoever makes himself great will be made humble. Whoever makes himself humble will be made great. NIV 12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. NCV 13 "How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You close the door for people to enter the kingdom of heaven. You yourselves don't enter, and you stop others who are trying to enter. NIV 13 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. NCV 14 NCV 15 "How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You travel across land and sea to find one person who will change to your ways. When you find that person, you make him more fit for hell than you are. NIV 15 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. NCV 16 "How terrible for you! You guide the people, but you are blind. You say, 'If people swear by the Temple when they make a promise, that means nothing. But if they swear by the gold that is in the Temple, they must keep that promise.' NIV 16 "Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.' NCV 17 You are blind fools! Which is greater: the gold or the Temple that makes that gold holy? NIV 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? NCV 18 And you say, 'If people swear by the altar when they make a promise, that means nothing. But if they swear by the gift on the altar, they must keep that promise.' NIV 18 You also say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.' NCV 19 You are blind! Which is greater: the gift or the altar that makes the gift holy NIV 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? NCV 20 The person who swears by the altar is really using the altar and also everything on the altar. NIV 20 Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. NCV 21 And the person who swears by the Temple is really using the Temple and also everything in the Temple NIV 21 And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. NCV 22 The person who swears by heaven is also using God's throne and the One who sits on that throne. NIV 22 And he who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it. NCV 23 "How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You give to God one-tenth of everything you earn -- even your mint, dill, and cumin. But you don't obey the really important teachings of the law -- justice, mercy, and being loyal. These are the things you should do, as well as those other things. NIV 23 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. NCV 24 You guide the people, but you are blind! You are like a person who picks a fly out of a drink and then swallows a camel! NIV 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. NCV 25 "How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You wash the outside of your cups and dishes, but inside they are full of things you got by cheating others and by pleasing only yourselves. NIV 25 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. NCV 26 Pharisees, you are blind! First make the inside of the cup clean, and then the outside of the cup can be truly clean. NIV 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. NCV 27 "How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You are like tombs that are painted white. Outside, those tombs look fine, but inside, they are full of the bones of dead people and all kinds of unclean things. NIV 27 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. NCV 28 It is the same with you. People look at you and think you are good, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and evil. NIV 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. NCV 29 "How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets, and you show honor to the graves of those who lived good lives. NIV 29 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. NCV 30 You say, 'If we had lived during the time of our ancestors, we would not have helped them kill the prophets.' NIV 30 And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' NCV 31 But you give proof that you are children of those who murdered the prophets. NIV 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. NCV 32 And you will complete the sin that your ancestors started. NIV 32 Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers! NCV 33 "You are snakes! A family of poisonous snakes! How are you going to escape God's judgment? NIV 33 "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? NCV 34 So I tell you this: I am sending to you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify. Some of them you will beat in your synagogues and chase from town to town. NIV 34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. NCV 35 So you will be guilty for the death of all the good people who have been killed on earth -- from the murder of that good man Abel to the murder of Zechariahn son of Berakiah, whom you murdered between the Temple and the altar. NIV 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. NCV 36 I tell you the truth, all of these things will happen to you people who are living now NIV 36 I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation. NCV 37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and stone to death those who are sent to you. Many times I wanted to gather your people as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you did not let me. NIV 37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. NCV 38 Now your house will be left completely empty NIV 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate. NCV 39 I tell you, you will not see me again until that time when you will say, 'God bless the One who comes in the name of the Lord.'" NIV 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.' "
