Matthew 23

YLT 1 Then Jesus spake to the multitudes, and to his disciples, NIV 1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: YLT 2 saying, `On the seat of Moses sat down the scribes and the Pharisees; NIV 2 "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. YLT 3 all, then, as much as they may say to you to observe, observe and do, but according to their works do not, for they say, and do not; NIV 3 So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. YLT 4 for they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them NIV 4 They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. YLT 5 `And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments, NIV 5 "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; YLT 6 they love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues, NIV 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; YLT 7 and the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi. NIV 7 they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them 'Rabbi.' YLT 8 `And ye -- ye may not be called Rabbi, for one is your director -- the Christ, and all ye are brethren; NIV 8 "But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. YLT 9 and ye may not call [any] your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens, NIV 9 And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. YLT 10 nor may ye be called directors, for one is your director -- the Christ. NIV 10 Nor are you to be called 'teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ. YLT 11 And the greater of you shall be your ministrant, NIV 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. YLT 12 and whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted. NIV 12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. YLT 13 `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter. NIV 13 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. YLT 14 `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment YLT 15 `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen -- ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves. NIV 15 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. YLT 16 `Wo to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary -- is debtor! NIV 16 "Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.' YLT 17 Fools and blind! for which [is] greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold? NIV 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? YLT 18 `And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it -- is debtor! NIV 18 You also say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.' YLT 19 Fools and blind! for which [is] greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift NIV 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? YLT 20 `He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it; NIV 20 Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. YLT 21 and he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it NIV 21 And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. YLT 22 and he who did swear by the heaven, doth swear by the throne of God, and by Him who is sitting upon it. NIV 22 And he who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it. YLT 23 `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law -- the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved [you] to do, and those not to neglect. NIV 23 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. YLT 24 `Blind guides! who are straining out the gnat, and the camel are swallowing. NIV 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. YLT 25 `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence. NIV 25 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. YLT 26 `Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean. NIV 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. YLT 27 `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness; NIV 27 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. YLT 28 so also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. NIV 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. YLT 29 `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous, NIV 29 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. YLT 30 and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. NIV 30 And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' YLT 31 So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets; NIV 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. YLT 32 and ye -- ye fill up the measure of your fathers. NIV 32 Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers! YLT 33 `Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna? NIV 33 "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? YLT 34 `Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city; NIV 34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. YLT 35 that on you may come all the righteous blood being poured out on the earth from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar: NIV 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. YLT 36 verily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation NIV 36 I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation. YLT 37 `Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will. NIV 37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. YLT 38 Lo, left desolate to you is your house NIV 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate. YLT 39 for I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed [is] he who is coming in the name of the Lord.' NIV 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.' "
