RSV 1 "Then the kingdom of heaven shall be compared to ten maidens who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. NIV 1 "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. RSV 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. NIV 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. RSV 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; NIV 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. RSV 4 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. NIV 4 The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. RSV 5 As the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. NIV 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. RSV 6 But at midnight there was a cry, 'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' NIV 6 "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' RSV 7 Then all those maidens rose and trimmed their lamps. NIV 7 "Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. RSV 8 And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' NIV 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.' RSV 9 But the wise replied, 'Perhaps there will not be enough for us and for you; go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.' NIV 9 " 'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.' RSV 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut. NIV 10 "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. RSV 11 Afterward the other maidens came also, saying, 'Lord, lord, open to us.' NIV 11 "Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!' RSV 12 But he replied, 'Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' NIV 12 "But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.' RSV 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. NIV 13 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour. RSV 14 "For it will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property; NIV 14 "Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. RSV 15 to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. NIV 15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. RSV 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more. NIV 16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. RSV 17 So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more. NIV 17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. RSV 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. NIV 18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. RSV 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. NIV 19 "After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. RSV 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' NIV 20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.' RSV 21 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' NIV 21 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' RSV 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' NIV 22 "The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.' NIV 23 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' RSV 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow; NIV 24 "Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. RSV 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' NIV 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.' RSV 26 But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed? NIV 26 "His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? RSV 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. NIV 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. RSV 28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. NIV 28 " 'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. RSV 29 For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. NIV 29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. RSV 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.' NIV 31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. RSV 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, NIV 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. RSV 33 and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. NIV 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
