Matthew 26

BBE 1 And when Jesus had come to the end of all these words, he said to his disciples, NIV 1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, BBE 2 After two days is the Passover, and the Son of man will be given up to the death of the cross. NIV 2 "As you know, the Passover is two days away--and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified." BBE 3 Then the chief priests and the rulers of the people came together in the house of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas. NIV 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, BBE 4 And they made designs together to take Jesus by some trick, and put him to death. NIV 4 and they plotted to arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him. BBE 5 But they said, Not while the feast is going on, for fear of trouble among the people. NIV 5 "But not during the Feast," they said, "or there may be a riot among the people." BBE 6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, NIV 6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, BBE 7 There came to him a woman having a bottle of perfume of great price, and she put the perfume on his head when he was seated at table. NIV 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table. BBE 8 But when the disciples saw it they were angry, saying, To what purpose is this waste? NIV 8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. BBE 9 For we might have got much money for this and given it to the poor. NIV 9 "This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor." BBE 10 But Jesus, seeing it, said to them, Why are you troubling the woman? she has done a kind act to me. NIV 10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. BBE 11 For the poor you have ever with you, but me you have not for ever. NIV 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. BBE 12 For in putting this perfume on my body, she did it to make me ready for my last resting-place. NIV 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. BBE 13 Truly I say to you, Wherever this good news goes out in all the world, what this woman has done will be talked of in memory of her. NIV 13 I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her." BBE 14 Then one of the twelve, who was named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, NIV 14 Then one of the Twelve--the one called Judas Iscariot--went to the chief priests BBE 15 What will you give me, if I give him up to you? And the price was fixed at thirty bits of silver. NIV 15 and asked, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty silver coins. BBE 16 And from that time he was watching for a chance to give him into their hands. NIV 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over. BBE 17 Now on the first day of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where are we to make ready for you to take the Passover meal? NIV 17 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?" BBE 18 And he said to them, Go into the town to such a man, and say to him, The Master says, My time is near: I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples. NIV 18 He replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.' " BBE 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had said to them; and they made ready the Passover. NIV 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. BBE 20 Now when evening was come, he was seated at table with the twelve disciples; NIV 20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. BBE 21 And while they were taking food, he said, Truly I say to you that one of you will be false to me. NIV 21 And while they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me." BBE 22 And they were very said, and said to him, one by one, Is it I, Lord? NIV 22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?" BBE 23 And he made answer and said, He who puts his hand into the plate with me, the same will be false to me. NIV 23 Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. BBE 24 The Son of man goes, even as the Writings say of him: but a curse is on that man through whom the Son of man is given up; it would have been well for that man if he had never come into the world. NIV 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born." BBE 25 And Judas, who was false to him, made answer and said, Is it I, Master? He says to him, Yes. NIV 25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" Jesus answered, "Yes, it is you." BBE 26 And when they were taking food, Jesus took bread and, after blessing it, he gave the broken bread to the disciples and said, Take it; this is my body. NIV 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." BBE 27 And he took a cup and, having given praise, he gave it to them, saying, NIV 27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. BBE 28 Take of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the testament, which is given for men for the forgiveness of sins. NIV 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. BBE 29 But I say to you that from now I will not take of this fruit of the vine, till that day when I take it new with you in my Father's kingdom. NIV 29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom." BBE 30 And after a song of praise to God, they went out to the Mountain of Olives. NIV 30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. BBE 31 Then said Jesus to them, All of you will be turned away from me this night: for it is said in the Writings, I will put to death the keeper of the sheep, and the sheep of the flock will be put to flight. NIV 31 Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' BBE 32 But after I am come back from the dead, I will go before you into Galilee. NIV 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." BBE 33 But Peter made answer and said to him, Though all may be turned away from you, I will never be turned away. NIV 33 Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will." BBE 34 Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you that this night, before the hour of the cock's cry, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. NIV 34 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." BBE 35 Peter says to him, Even if I am put to death with you, I will not be false to you. So said all the disciples. NIV 35 But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same. BBE 36 Then comes Jesus with them to a place named Gethsemane, and says to his disciples, Be seated here, while I go over there for prayer. NIV 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." BBE 37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and became sad and very troubled. NIV 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. BBE 38 Then says he to them, My soul is very sad, even to death: keep watch with me here. NIV 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." BBE 39 And he went forward a little, and falling down on his face in prayer, he said, O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup go from me; but let not my pleasure, but yours be done. NIV 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." BBE 40 And he comes to the disciples, and sees that they are sleeping, and says to Peter, What, were you not able to keep watch with me one hour? NIV 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. BBE 41 Keep watch with prayer, so that you may not be put to the test: the spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is feeble. NIV 41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." BBE 42 Again, a second time he went away, and said in prayer, O my Father, if this may not go from me without my taking it, let your pleasure be done. NIV 42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done." BBE 43 And he came again and saw them sleeping, for their eyes were tired. NIV 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. BBE 44 And he went away from them again, and a third time said the same prayer. NIV 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. BBE 45 Then he comes to the disciples; and says to them, Go on sleeping now, and take your rest: for the hour is come, and the Son of man is given into the hands of evil men. NIV 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. BBE 46 Up, let us be going: see, he who gives me up is near. NIV 46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!" BBE 47 And while he was still talking, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a band armed with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and those in authority over the people. NIV 47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. BBE 48 Now the false one had given them a sign saying, The one to whom I give a kiss, that is he: take him. NIV 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." BBE 49 And straight away he came to Jesus and said, Master! and gave him a kiss. NIV 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him. BBE 50 And Jesus said to him, Friend, do that for which you have come. Then they came and put hands on Jesus, and took him. NIV 50 Jesus replied, "Friend, do what you came for." Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. BBE 51 And one of those who were with Jesus put out his hand, and took out his sword and gave the servant of the high priest a blow, cutting off his ear. NIV 51 With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. BBE 52 Then says Jesus to him, Put up your sword again into its place: for all those who take the sword will come to death by the sword. NIV 52 "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. BBE 53 Does it not seem possible to you that if I make request to my Father he will even now send me an army of angels? NIV 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? BBE 54 But how then would the Writings come true, which say that so it has to be? NIV 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?" BBE 55 In that hour Jesus said to the people, Have you come out as against a thief with swords and sticks to take me? I was teaching every day in the Temple and you took me not. NIV 55 At that time Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. BBE 56 But all this has taken place so that the writings of the prophets might come true. Then all his disciples went from him in flight. NIV 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. BBE 57 And those who had made Jesus prisoner took him away to the house of Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and those in authority over the people had come together. NIV 57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. BBE 58 But Peter went after him at a distance, to the house of the high priest, and went in and took his seat with the servants, to see the end. NIV 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. BBE 59 Now the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin were looking for false witness against Jesus, so that they might put him to death; NIV 59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. BBE 60 And they were not able to get it, though a number of false witnesses came. NIV 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward BBE 61 But later there came two who said, This man said, I am able to give the Temple of God to destruction, and to put it up again in three days. NIV 61 and declared, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.' " BBE 62 And the high priest got up and said to him, Have you no answer? what is it which these say against you? NIV 62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" BBE 63 But Jesus said not a word. And the high priest said to him, I put you on oath, by the living God, that you will say to us if you are the Christ, the Son of God. NIV 63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." BBE 64 Jesus says to him, You say so: but I say to you, From now you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. NIV 64 "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." BBE 65 Then the high priest, violently parting his robes, said, He has said evil against God: what more need have we of witnesses? for now his words against God have come to your ears: NIV 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. BBE 66 What is your opinion? They made answer and said, It is right for him to be put to death. NIV 66 What do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered. BBE 67 Then they put shame on him, and were cruel to him: and some gave him blows, saying, NIV 67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him BBE 68 Be a prophet, O Christ, and say who gave you a blow! NIV 68 and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?" BBE 69 Now Peter was seated in the open square outside the house: and a servant-girl came to him, saying, You were with Jesus the Galilaean. NIV 69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said. BBE 70 But he said before them all that it was false, saying, I have no knowledge of what you say. NIV 70 But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. BBE 71 And when he had gone out into the doorway, another saw him and says to those who were there, This man was with Jesus the Nazarene. NIV 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth." BBE 72 And again he said with an oath, I have no knowledge of the man. NIV 72 He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!" BBE 73 And after a little time those who were near came and said to Peter, Truly you are one of them; because your talk is witness against you. NIV 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away." BBE 74 Then with curses and oaths he said, I have no knowledge of the man. And straight away there came the cry of a cock. NIV 74 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. BBE 75 And the word of Jesus came back to Peter, when he said, Before the hour of the cock's cry, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. And he went out, weeping bitterly. NIV 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.
