NIRV 30 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. NIV 30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. NIRV 31 Jesus told them, "This very night you will all turn away because of me. It is written that the Lord said, " 'I will strike the shepherd down. Then the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' (Zechariah 13:7) NIV 31 Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' NIRV 32 But after I rise from the dead, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." NIV 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." NIRV 33 Peter replied, "All the others may turn away because of you. But I never will." NIV 33 Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will." NIRV 34 "What I'm about to tell you is true," Jesus answered. "It will happen this very night. Before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you don't know me." NIV 34 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." NIRV 35 But Peter said, "I may have to die with you. But I will never say I don't know you." And all the other disciples said the same thing. NIV 35 But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same. NIRV 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane. He said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." NIV 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." Keep watch with me." NIV 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." NIRV 39 He went a little farther. Then he fell with his face to the ground. He prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want." NIV 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." NIRV 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Couldn't you men keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. NIV 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. NIRV 41 "Watch and pray. Then you won't fall into sin when you are tempted. The spirit is willing. But the body is weak." NIV 41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." NIRV 42 Jesus went away a second time. He prayed, "My Father, is it possible for this cup to be taken away? But if I must drink it, may what you want be done." NIV 42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done." NIRV 43 Then he came back. Again he found them sleeping. They couldn't keep their eyes open. NIV 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. NIRV 44 So he left them and went away once more. For the third time he prayed the same thing. NIV 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. NIRV 45 Then he returned to the disciples. He said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look! The hour is near. The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners. NIV 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. NIRV 46 Get up! Let us go! Here comes the one who is handing me over to them!" NIV 46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!" NIRV 47 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas arrived. He was one of the Twelve. A large crowd was with him. They were carrying swords and clubs. The chief priests and the elders of the people had sent them. NIV 47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. NIRV 48 Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, had arranged a signal with them. "The one I kiss is the man," he said. "Arrest him." NIV 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." NIRV 49 So Judas went to Jesus at once. He said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" And he kissed him. NIV 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him. NIRV 50 Jesus replied, "Friend, do what you came to do." Then the men stepped forward. They grabbed Jesus and arrested him. NIV 50 Jesus replied, "Friend, do what you came for." Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. NIRV 51 At that moment, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword. He pulled it out and struck the servant of the high priest with it. He cut off the servant's ear. NIV 51 With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. NIRV 52 "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him. "All who use the sword will die by the sword. NIV 52 "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. NIRV 53 Do you think I can't ask my Father for help? He would send an army of more than 70,000 angels right away. NIV 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? NIRV 54 But then how would the Scriptures come true? They say it must happen in this way." NIV 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?" NIRV 55 At that time Jesus spoke to the crowd. "Am I leading a band of armed men against you?" he asked. "Do you have to come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courtyard teaching. And you didn't arrest me. NIV 55 At that time Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. NIRV 56 But all this has happened so that the words of the prophets would come true." Then all the disciples left him and ran away. NIV 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. NIRV 57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest. The teachers of the law and the elders had come together there. NIV 57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. NIRV 58 Not too far away, Peter followed Jesus. He went right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see what would happen. NIV 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. NIRV 59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for something to use against Jesus. They wanted to put him to death. NIV 59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. NIRV 60 But they did not find any proof, even though many false witnesses came forward. Finally, two other witnesses came forward. NIV 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward NIRV 61 They said, "This fellow claimed, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God. I can build it again in three days.' " NIV 61 and declared, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.' " NIRV 62 Then the high priest stood up. He asked Jesus, "Aren't you going to answer? What are these charges that these men are bringing against you?" NIV 62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" NIRV 63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I command you under oath by the living God. Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." NIV 63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." NIRV 64 "Yes. It is just as you say," Jesus replied. "But here is what I say to all of you. In days to come, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One. You will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven." NIV 64 "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." NIRV 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes. He said, "He has spoken a very evil thing against God! Why do we need any more witnesses? You have heard him say this evil thing. NIV 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. NIRV 66 What do you think?" "He must die!" they answered. NIV 66 What do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered. NIRV 67 Then they spit in his face. They hit him with their fists. Others slapped him. NIV 67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him NIRV 68 They said, "Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you?" NIV 68 and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?" NIRV 69 Peter was sitting out in the courtyard. A female servant came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said. NIV 69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said. NIRV 70 But in front of all of them, Peter said he was not. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. NIV 70 But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. NIRV 71 Then he went out to the gate leading into the courtyard. There another woman saw him. She said to the people, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth." NIV 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth." NIRV 72 Again he said he was not. With an oath he said, "I don't know the man!" NIV 72 He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!" NIRV 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter. "You must be one of them," they said. "The way you talk gives you away." NIV 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away." NIRV 74 Then Peter began to call down curses on himself. He took an oath and said to them, "I don't know the man!" Right away a rooster crowed. NIV 74 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. NIRV 75 Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said. "The rooster will crow," Jesus had told him. "Before it does, you will say three times that you don't know me." Peter went outside. He broke down and sobbed. NIV 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.
