Matthew 26

NKJV 1 Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, that He said to His disciples, NIV 1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, NKJV 2 "You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified." NIV 2 "As you know, the Passover is two days away--and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified." NKJV 3 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, NIV 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, NKJV 4 and plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him. NIV 4 and they plotted to arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him. NKJV 5 But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people." NIV 5 "But not during the Feast," they said, "or there may be a riot among the people." NKJV 6 And when Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, NIV 6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, NKJV 7 a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table. NIV 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table. NKJV 8 But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste? NIV 8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. NKJV 9 For this fragrant oil might have been sold for much and given to the poor." NIV 9 "This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor." NKJV 10 But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. NIV 10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. NKJV 11 For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always. NIV 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. NKJV 12 For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial. NIV 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. NKJV 13 Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her." NIV 13 I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her." NKJV 14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests NIV 14 Then one of the Twelve--the one called Judas Iscariot--went to the chief priests NKJV 15 and said, "What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?" And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. NIV 15 and asked, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty silver coins. NKJV 16 So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him. NIV 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over. NKJV 17 Now on the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?" NIV 17 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?" NKJV 18 And He said, "Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples." ' " NIV 18 He replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.' " NKJV 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover. NIV 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. NKJV 20 When evening had come, He sat down with the twelve. NIV 20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. NKJV 21 Now as they were eating, He said, "Assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me." NIV 21 And while they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me." NKJV 22 And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and each of them began to say to Him, "Lord, is it I?" NIV 22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?" NKJV 23 He answered and said, "He who dipped his hand with Me in the dish will betray Me. NIV 23 Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. NKJV 24 The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born." NIV 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born." NKJV 25 Then Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, "Rabbi, is it I?" He said to him, "You have said it." NIV 25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" Jesus answered, "Yes, it is you." NKJV 26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." NIV 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." NKJV 27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. NIV 27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. NKJV 28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. NIV 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. NKJV 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom." NIV 29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom." NKJV 30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. NIV 30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. NKJV 31 Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: 'I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' NIV 31 Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' NKJV 32 But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee." NIV 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." NKJV 33 Peter answered and said to Him, "Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble." NIV 33 Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will." NKJV 34 Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." NIV 34 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." NKJV 35 Peter said to Him, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" And so said all the disciples. NIV 35 But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same. NKJV 36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, "Sit here while I go and pray over there." NIV 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." NKJV 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. NIV 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. NKJV 38 Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me." NIV 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." NKJV 39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." NIV 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." NKJV 40 Then He came to the disciples and found them asleep, and said to Peter, "What? Could you not watch with Me one hour? NIV 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. NKJV 41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." NIV 41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." NKJV 42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done." NIV 42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done." NKJV 43 And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy. NIV 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. NKJV 44 So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. NIV 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. NKJV 45 Then He came to His disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. NIV 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. NKJV 46 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand." NIV 46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!" NKJV 47 And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people. NIV 47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. NKJV 48 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him." NIV 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." NKJV 49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. NIV 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him. NKJV 50 But Jesus said to him, "Friend, why have you come?" Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. NIV 50 Jesus replied, "Friend, do what you came for." Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. NKJV 51 And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. NIV 51 With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. NKJV 52 But Jesus said to him, "Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. NIV 52 "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. NKJV 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? NIV 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? NKJV 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?" NIV 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?" NKJV 55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. NIV 55 At that time Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. NKJV 56 But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled. NIV 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. NKJV 57 And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. NIV 57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. NKJV 58 But Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest's courtyard. And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end. NIV 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. NKJV 59 Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, NIV 59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. NKJV 60 but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward NIV 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward NKJV 61 and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.' " NIV 61 and declared, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.' " NKJV 62 And the high priest arose and said to Him, "Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?" NIV 62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" NKJV 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!" NIV 63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." NKJV 64 Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven." NIV 64 "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." NKJV 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! NIV 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. NKJV 66 What do you think?" They answered and said, "He is deserving of death." NIV 66 What do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered. NKJV 67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, NIV 67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him NKJV 68 saying, "Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?" NIV 68 and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?" NKJV 69 Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, "You also were with Jesus of Galilee." NIV 69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said. NKJV 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you are saying." NIV 70 But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. NKJV 71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth." NIV 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth." NKJV 72 But again he denied with an oath, "I do not know the Man!" NIV 72 He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!" NKJV 73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, "Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you." NIV 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away." NKJV 74 Then he began to curse and swear, saying, "I do not know the Man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. NIV 74 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. NKJV 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." So he went out and wept bitterly. NIV 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.
