Matthew 27:45-56

ESV 45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. NIV 45 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. ESV 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" NIV 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ""Eloi, Eloi," "lama" "sabachthani?""--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" ESV 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, "This man is calling Elijah." NIV 47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling Elijah." ESV 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. NIV 48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. ESV 49 But the others said, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him." NIV 49 The rest said, "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to save him." ESV 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. NIV 50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. ESV 51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. NIV 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. ESV 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, NIV 52 The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. ESV 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. NIV 53 They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people. ESV 54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!" NIV 54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!" ESV 55 There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him, NIV 55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. ESV 56 among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. NIV 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
