Matthew 3

RSVA 1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, NIV 1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea RSVA 2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." NIV 2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." RSVA 3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." NIV 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' " RSVA 4 Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. NIV 4 John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. RSVA 9 and do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. NIV 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. RSVA 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. NIV 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. RSVA 11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. NIV 11 "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. RSVA 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." RSVA 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. NIV 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. RSVA 14 John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" NIV 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" RSVA 15 But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness." Then he consented. NIV 15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. RSVA 16 And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; NIV 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. RSVA 17 and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." NIV 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
