Matthew 4

BBE 1 Then Jesus was sent by the Spirit into the waste land to be tested by the Evil One. NIV 1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. BBE 2 And after going without food for forty days and forty nights, he was in need of it. NIV 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. BBE 3 And the Evil One came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, give the word for these stones to become bread. NIV 3 The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." BBE 4 But he made answer and said, It is in the Writings, Bread is not man's only need, but every word which comes out of the mouth of God. NIV 4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.' " BBE 5 Then the Evil One took him to the holy town; and he put him on the highest point of the Temple and said to him, NIV 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. BBE 6 If you are the Son of God, let yourself go down; for it is in the Writings, He will give his angels care over you; and, In their hands they will keep you up, so that your foot may not be crushed against a stone. NIV 6 "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: " 'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.' " BBE 7 Jesus said to him, Again it is in the Writings, You may not put the Lord your God to the test. NIV 7 Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.' " BBE 8 Again, the Evil One took him up to a very high mountain, and let him see all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; NIV 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. BBE 9 And he said to him, All these things will I give you, if you will go down on your face and give me worship. NIV 9 "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." BBE 10 Then said Jesus to him, Away, Satan: for it is in the Writings, Give worship to the Lord your God and be his servant only. NIV 10 Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.' " BBE 11 Then the Evil One went away from him, and angels came and took care of him. NIV 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. BBE 12 Now when it came to his ears that John had been put in prison, he went away to Galilee; NIV 12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to Galilee. BBE 13 And going away from Nazareth, he came and made his living-place in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the country of Zebulun and Naphtali: NIV 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali-- BBE 14 So that the word of the prophet Isaiah might come true, NIV 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: BBE 15 The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, NIV 15 "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles-- BBE 16 The people who were in the dark saw a great light, and to those in the land of the shade of death did the dawn come up. NIV 16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned." BBE 17 From that time Jesus went about preaching and saying, Let your hearts be turned from sin, for the kingdom of heaven is near. NIV 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." BBE 18 And when he was walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, whose other name was Peter, and Andrew, his brother, who were putting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. NIV 18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. BBE 19 And he said to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. NIV 19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." BBE 20 And straight away they let go the nets and went after him. NIV 20 At once they left their nets and followed him. BBE 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother, in the boat with their father, stitching up their nets; and he said, Come. NIV 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, BBE 22 And they went straight from the boat and their father and came after him. NIV 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. BBE 23 And Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their Synagogues and preaching the good news of the kingdom, and making well those who were ill with any disease among the people. NIV 23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. BBE 24 And news of him went out through all Syria; and they took to him all who were ill with different diseases and pains, those having evil spirits and those who were off their heads, and those who had no power of moving. And he made them well. NIV 24 News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them. BBE 25 And there went after him great numbers from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judaea and from the other side of Jordan. NIV 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
