Matthew 4

CJB 1 Then the Spirit led Yeshua up into the wilderness to be tempted by the Adversary. NIV 1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. CJB 2 After Yeshua had fasted forty days and nights, he was hungry. NIV 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. CJB 3 The Tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, order these stones to become bread." NIV 3 The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." CJB 4 But he answered, "The Tanakh says, `Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of ADONAI'" NIV 4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.' " CJB 5 Then the Adversary took him to the holy city and set him on the highest point of the Temple. NIV 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. CJB 6 "If you are the Son of God," he said, "jump! For the Tanakh says, `He will order his angels to be responsible for you. . . . They will support you with their hands, so that you will not hurt your feet on the stones.'" NIV 6 "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: " 'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.' " CJB 7 Yeshua replied to him, "But it also says, `Do not put ADONAI your God to the test.'"h NIV 7 Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.' " CJB 8 Once more, the Adversary took him up to the summit of a very high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in all their glory, NIV 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. CJB 9 and said to him, "All this I will give you if you will bow down and worship me." NIV 9 "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." CJB 10 "Away with you, Satan!" Yeshua told him, "For the Tanakh says, `Worship ADONAI your God, and serve only him.'" NIV 10 Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.' " CJB 11 Then the Adversary let him alone, and angels came and took care of him. NIV 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. CJB 12 When Yeshua heard that Yochanan had been put in prison, he returned to the Galil; NIV 12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to Galilee. CJB 13 but he left Natzeret and came to live in K'far-Nachum, a lake shore town near the boundary between Z'vulun and Naftali. NIV 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali-- CJB 14 This happened in order to fulfill what Yesha`yahu the prophet had said, NIV 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: CJB 15 "Land of Z'vulun and land of Naftali, toward the lake, beyond the Yarden, Galil-of-the-Goyim -- NIV 15 "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles-- CJB 16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; upon those living in the region, in the shadow of death, light has dawned." NIV 16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned." CJB 17 From that time on, Yeshua began proclaiming, "Turn from your sins to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near!" NIV 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." CJB 18 As Yeshua walked by Lake Kinneret, he saw two brothers who were fishermen -- Shim`on, known as Kefa, and his brother Andrew -- throwing their net into the lake. NIV 18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. CJB 19 Yeshua said to them, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers for men!" NIV 19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." CJB 20 At once they left their nets and went with him. NIV 20 At once they left their nets and followed him. CJB 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers -- Ya'akov Ben-Zavdai and Yochanan his brother -- in the boat with their father Zavdai, repairing their nets; and he called them. NIV 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, CJB 22 At once they left the boat and their father and went with Yeshua. NIV 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. CJB 23 Yeshua went all over the Galil teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing people from every kind of disease and sickness. NIV 23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. CJB 24 Word of him spread throughout all Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill, suffering from various diseases and pains, and those held in the power of demons, and epileptics and paralytics; and he healed them. NIV 24 News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them. CJB 25 Huge crowds followed him from the Galil, the Ten Towns, Yerushalayim, Y'hudah, and `Ever-HaYarden. NIV 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
