Matthew 5

GNT 1 Jesus saw the crowds and went up a hill, where he sat down. His disciples gathered around him, NIV 1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, GNT 2 and he began to teach them: NIV 2 and he began to teach them, saying: GNT 3 "Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor; the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them! NIV 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. GNT 4 "Happy are those who mourn; God will comfort them! NIV 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. GNT 5 "Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what God has promised! NIV 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. GNT 6 "Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires; God will satisfy them fully! NIV 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. GNT 7 "Happy are those who are merciful to others; God will be merciful to them! NIV 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. GNT 8 "Happy are the pure in heart; they will see God! NIV 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. GNT 9 "Happy are those who work for peace; God will call them his children! NIV 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. GNT 10 "Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires; the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them! NIV 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. GNT 11 "Happy are you when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of evil lies against you because you are my followers. NIV 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. GNT 12 Be happy and glad, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. This is how the prophets who lived before you were persecuted. NIV 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. GNT 13 "You are like salt for the whole human race. But if salt loses its saltiness, there is no way to make it salty again. It has become worthless, so it is thrown out and people trample on it. NIV 13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. GNT 14 "You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. NIV 14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. GNT 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead it is put on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house. NIV 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. GNT 16 In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven. NIV 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. GNT 17 "Do not think that I have come to do away with the Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets. I have not come to do away with them, but to make their teachings come true. NIV 17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. GNT 18 Remember that as long as heaven and earth last, not the least point nor the smallest detail of the Law will be done away with - not until the end of all things. NIV 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. GNT 19 So then, whoever disobeys even the least important of the commandments and teaches others to do the same, will be least in the Kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys the Law and teaches others to do the same, will be great in the Kingdom of heaven. NIV 19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. GNT 20 I tell you, then, that you will be able to enter the Kingdom of heaven only if you are more faithful than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees in doing what God requires. NIV 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. GNT 21 "You have heard that people were told in the past, "Do not commit murder; anyone who does will be brought to trial.' NIV 21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' GNT 22 But now I tell you: if you are angry with your brother you will be brought to trial, if you call your brother "You good-for-nothing!' you will be brought before the Council, and if you call your brother a worthless fool you will be in danger of going to the fire of hell. NIV 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca, ' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. GNT 23 So if you are about to offer your gift to God at the altar and there you remember that your brother has something against you, NIV 23 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, GNT 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with your brother, and then come back and offer your gift to God. NIV 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. GNT 25 "If someone brings a lawsuit against you and takes you to court, settle the dispute while there is time, before you get to court. Once you are there, you will be turned over to the judge, who will hand you over to the police, and you will be put in jail. NIV 25 "Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. GNT 26 There you will stay, I tell you, until you pay the last penny of your fine. NIV 26 I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. GNT 27 "You have heard that it was said, "Do not commit adultery.' NIV 27 "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' GNT 28 But now I tell you: anyone who looks at a woman and wants to possess her is guilty of committing adultery with her in his heart. NIV 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. GNT 29 So if your right eye causes you to sin, take it out and throw it away! It is much better for you to lose a part of your body than to have your whole body thrown into hell. NIV 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. GNT 30 If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is much better for you to lose one of your limbs than to have your whole body go off to hell. NIV 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. GNT 31 "It was also said, "Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce.' NIV 31 "It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.' GNT 32 But now I tell you: if a man divorces his wife for any cause other than her unfaithfulness, then he is guilty of making her commit adultery if she marries again; and the man who marries her commits adultery also. NIV 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery. GNT 33 "You have also heard that people were told in the past, "Do not break your promise, but do what you have vowed to the Lord to do.' NIV 33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' GNT 34 But now I tell you: do not use any vow when you make a promise. Do not swear by heaven, for it is God's throne; NIV 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; GNT 35 nor by earth, for it is the resting place for his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. NIV 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. GNT 36 Do not even swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black. NIV 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. GNT 37 Just say "Yes' or "No' - anything else you say comes from the Evil One. NIV 37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. GNT 38 "You have heard that it was said, "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' NIV 38 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' GNT 39 But now I tell you: do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too. NIV 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. GNT 40 And if someone takes you to court to sue you for your shirt, let him have your coat as well. NIV 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. GNT 41 And if one of the occupation troops forces you to carry his pack one mile, carry it two miles. NIV 41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. GNT 42 When someone asks you for something, give it to him; when someone wants to borrow something, lend it to him. NIV 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. GNT 43 "You have heard that it was said, "Love your friends, hate your enemies.' NIV 43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' GNT 44 But now I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, NIV 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, GNT 45 so that you may become the children of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun to shine on bad and good people alike, and gives rain to those who do good and to those who do evil. NIV 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. GNT 46 Why should God reward you if you love only the people who love you? Even the tax collectors do that! NIV 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? GNT 47 And if you speak only to your friends, have you done anything out of the ordinary? Even the pagans do that! NIV 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? GNT 48 You must be perfect - just as your Father in heaven is perfect. NIV 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
