Matthew 5:38-48

NLT 38 “You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ NIV 38 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' NLT 39 But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. NIV 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. NLT 40 If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. NIV 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. NLT 41 If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles. NIV 41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. NLT 42 Give to those who ask, and don’t turn away from those who want to borrow. NIV 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. NLT 43 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. NIV 43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' NLT 44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! NIV 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, NLT 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. NIV 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. NLT 46 If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. NIV 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? NLT 47 If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. NIV 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? NLT 48 But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect. NIV 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
