Matthew 8

NCV 1 When Jesus came down from the hill, great crowds followed him. NIV 1 When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. NCV 2 Then a man with a skin disease came to Jesus. The man bowed down before him and said, "Lord, you can heal me if you will." NIV 2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." NCV 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man and said, "I will. Be healed!" And immediately the man was healed from his disease. NIV 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. NCV 4 Then Jesus said to him, "Don't tell anyone about this. But go and show yourself to the priestn and offer the gift Moses commandedn for people who are made well. This will show the people what I have done." NIV 4 Then Jesus said to him, "See that you don't tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." NCV 5 When Jesus entered the city of Capernaum, an army officer came to him, begging for help. NIV 5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. NCV 6 The officer said, "Lord, my servant is at home in bed. He can't move his body and is in much pain." NIV 6 "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering." NCV 7 Jesus said to the officer, "I will go and heal him." NIV 7 Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him." NCV 8 The officer answered, "Lord, I am not worthy for you to come into my house. You only need to command it, and my servant will be healed. NIV 8 The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. NCV 9 I, too, am a man under the authority of others, and I have soldiers under my command. I tell one soldier, 'Go,' and he goes. I tell another soldier, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and my servant does it. NIV 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." NCV 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. He said to those who were following him, "I tell you the truth, this is the greatest faith I have found, even in Israel. NIV 10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. NCV 11 Many people will come from the east and from the west and will sit and eat with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. NIV 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. NCV 12 But those people who should be in the kingdom will be thrown outside into the darkness, where people will cry and grind their teeth with pain." NIV 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." NCV 13 Then Jesus said to the officer, "Go home. Your servant will be healed just as you believed he would." And his servant was healed that same hour. NIV 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour. NCV 14 When Jesus went to Peter's house, he saw that Peter's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. NIV 14 When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. NCV 15 Jesus touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she stood up and began to serve Jesus. NIV 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. NCV 16 That evening people brought to Jesus many who had demons. Jesus spoke and the demons left them, and he healed all the sick. NIV 16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. NCV 17 He did these things to bring about what Isaiah the prophet had said: "He took our suffering on him and carried our diseases." NIV 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases." NCV 18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he told his followers to go to the other side of the lake. NIV 18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. NCV 19 Then a teacher of the law came to Jesus and said, "Teacher, I will follow you any place you go." NIV 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." NCV 20 Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes to live in, and the birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to rest his head." NIV 20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." NCV 21 Another man, one of Jesus' followers, said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." NIV 21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." NCV 22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the people who are dead bury their own dead." NIV 22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead." NCV 23 Jesus got into a boat, and his followers went with him. NIV 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. NCV 24 A great storm arose on the lake so that waves covered the boat, but Jesus was sleeping. NIV 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. NCV 25 His followers went to him and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We will drown!" NIV 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" NCV 26 Jesus answered, "Why are you afraid? You don't have enough faith." Then Jesus got up and gave a command to the wind and the waves, and it became completely calm. NIV 26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. NCV 27 The men were amazed and said, "What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" NIV 27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!" NCV 28 When Jesus arrived at the other side of the lake in the area of the Gadarenen people, two men who had demons in them met him. These men lived in the burial caves and were so dangerous that people could not use the road by those caves. NIV 28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. NCV 29 They shouted, "What do you want with us, Son of God? Did you come here to torture us before the right time?" NIV 29 "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?" NCV 30 Near that place there was a large herd of pigs feeding. NIV 30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. NCV 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you make us leave these men, please send us into that herd of pigs." NIV 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs." NCV 32 Jesus said to them, "Go!" So the demons left the men and went into the pigs. Then the whole herd rushed down the hill into the lake and were drowned. NIV 32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. NCV 33 The herdsmen ran away and went into town, where they told about all of this and what had happened to the men who had demons. NIV 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. NCV 34 Then the whole town went out to see Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their area. NIV 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
