Matthew 8

NLT 1 Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside. NIV 1 When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. NLT 2 Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached Jesus. He knelt before him, worshiping. "Lord," the man said, "if you want to, you can make me well again." NIV 2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." NLT 3 Jesus touched him. "I want to," he said. "Be healed!" And instantly the leprosy disappeared. NIV 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. NLT 4 Then Jesus said to him, "Go right over to the priest and let him examine you. Don't talk to anyone along the way. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy, so everyone will have proof of your healing." NIV 4 Then Jesus said to him, "See that you don't tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." NLT 5 When Jesus arrived in Capernaum, a Roman officer came and pleaded with him, NIV 5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. NLT 6 "Lord, my young servant lies in bed, paralyzed and racked with pain." NIV 6 "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering." NLT 7 Jesus said, "I will come and heal him." NIV 7 Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him." NLT 8 Then the officer said, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed! NIV 8 The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. NLT 9 I know, because I am under the authority of my superior officers and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, 'Go,' and they go, or 'Come,' and they come. And if I say to my slaves, 'Do this or that,' they do it." NIV 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." NLT 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd, he said, "I tell you the truth, I haven't seen faith like this in all the land of Israel! NIV 10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. NLT 11 And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven. NIV 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. NLT 12 But many Israelites -- those for whom the Kingdom was prepared -- will be cast into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." NIV 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." NLT 13 Then Jesus said to the Roman officer, "Go on home. What you have believed has happened." And the young servant was healed that same hour. NIV 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour. NLT 14 When Jesus arrived at Peter's house, Peter's mother-in-law was in bed with a high fever. NIV 14 When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. NLT 15 But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. Then she got up and prepared a meal for him. NIV 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. NLT 16 That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. All the spirits fled when he commanded them to leave; and he healed all the sick. NIV 16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. NLT 17 This fulfilled the word of the Lord through Isaiah, who said, "He took our sicknesses and removed our diseases." NIV 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases." NLT 18 When Jesus noticed how large the crowd was growing, he instructed his disciples to cross to the other side of the lake. NIV 18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. NLT 19 Then one of the teachers of religious law said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you no matter where you go!" NIV 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." NLT 20 But Jesus said, "Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but I, the Son of Man, have no home of my own, not even a place to lay my head." NIV 20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." NLT 21 Another of his disciples said, "Lord, first let me return home and bury my father." NIV 21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." NLT 22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me now! Let those who are spiritually dead care for their own dead." NIV 22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead." NLT 23 Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. NIV 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. NLT 24 Suddenly, a terrible storm came up, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. NIV 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. NLT 25 The disciples went to him and woke him up, shouting, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" NIV 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" NLT 26 And Jesus answered, "Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!" Then he stood up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly all was calm. NIV 26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. NLT 27 The disciples just sat there in awe. "Who is this?" they asked themselves. "Even the wind and waves obey him!" NIV 27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!" NLT 28 When Jesus arrived on the other side of the lake in the land of the Gadarenes, two men who were possessed by demons met him. They lived in a cemetery and were so dangerous that no one could go through that area. NIV 28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. NLT 29 They began screaming at him, "Why are you bothering us, Son of God? You have no right to torture us before God's appointed time!" NIV 29 "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?" NLT 30 A large herd of pigs was feeding in the distance, NIV 30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. NLT 31 so the demons begged, "If you cast us out, send us into that herd of pigs." NIV 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs." NLT 32 "All right, go!" Jesus commanded them. So the demons came out of the men and entered the pigs, and the whole herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water. NIV 32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. NLT 33 The herdsmen fled to the nearby city, telling everyone what happened to the demon-possessed men. NIV 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. NLT 34 The entire town came out to meet Jesus, but they begged him to go away and leave them alone. NIV 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
