Matthew 8

RSV 1 When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; NIV 1 When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. RSV 2 and behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, if you will, you can make me clean." NIV 2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." RSV 3 And he stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, "I will; be clean." And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. NIV 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. RSV 4 And Jesus said to him, "See that you say nothing to any one; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to the people." NIV 4 Then Jesus said to him, "See that you don't tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." RSV 5 As he entered Caper'na-um, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching him NIV 5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. RSV 6 and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress." NIV 6 "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering." RSV 7 And he said to him, "I will come and heal him." NIV 7 Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him." RSV 8 But the centurion answered him, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. NIV 8 The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. RSV 9 For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it." NIV 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." RSV 10 When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, "Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. NIV 10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. RSV 11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, NIV 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. RSV 12 while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." NIV 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." RSV 13 And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; be it done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed at that very moment. NIV 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour. RSV 14 And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever; NIV 14 When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. RSV 15 he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and served him. NIV 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. RSV 16 That evening they brought to him many who were possessed with demons; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick. NIV 16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. RSV 17 This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, "He took our infirmities and bore our diseases." NIV 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases." RSV 18 Now when Jesus saw great crowds around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. NIV 18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. RSV 19 And a scribe came up and said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." NIV 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." RSV 20 And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head." NIV 20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." RSV 21 Another of the disciples said to him, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." NIV 21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." RSV 22 But Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead." NIV 22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead." RSV 23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. NIV 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. RSV 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. NIV 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. RSV 25 And they went and woke him, saying, "Save, Lord; we are perishing." NIV 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" RSV 26 And he said to them, "Why are you afraid, O men of little faith?" Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. NIV 26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. RSV 27 And the men marveled, saying, "What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?" NIV 27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!" RSV 28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. NIV 28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. RSV 29 And behold, they cried out, "What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?" NIV 29 "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?" RSV 30 Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. NIV 30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. RSV 31 And the demons begged him, "If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine." NIV 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs." RSV 32 And he said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. NIV 32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. RSV 33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. NIV 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. RSV 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood. NIV 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
