Matthew 8

CEBA 1 Now when Jesus had come down from the mountain, large crowds followed him. NIV 1 When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. CEBA 2 A man with a skin disease came, kneeled before him, and said, "Lord, if you want, you can make me clean." NIV 2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." CEBA 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched him, saying, "I do want to. Become clean." Instantly his skin disease was cleansed. NIV 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. CEBA 4 Jesus said to him, "Don't say anything to anyone. Instead, go and show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded. This will be a testimony to them." NIV 4 Then Jesus said to him, "See that you don't tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." CEBA 5 When Jesus went to Capernaum, a centurion approached, NIV 5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. CEBA 6 pleading with him, "Lord, my servant is flat on his back at home, paralyzed, and his suffering is awful." NIV 6 "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering." CEBA 7 Jesus responded, "I'll come and heal him." NIV 7 Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him." CEBA 8 But the centurion replied, "Lord, I don't deserve to have you come under my roof. Just say the word and my servant will be healed. NIV 8 The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. CEBA 9 I'm a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I say to one, ‘Go,' and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,' and the servant does it." NIV 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." CEBA 10 When Jesus heard this, he was impressed and said to the people following him, "I say to you with all seriousness that even in Israel I haven't found faith like this. NIV 10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. CEBA 11 I say to you that there are many who will come from east and west and sit down to eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. NIV 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. CEBA 12 But the children of the kingdom will be thrown outside into the darkness. People there will be weeping and grinding their teeth." NIV 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." CEBA 13 Jesus said to the centurion, "Go; it will be done for you just as you have believed." And his servant was healed that very moment. NIV 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour. CEBA 14 Jesus went home with Peter and saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. NIV 14 When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. CEBA 15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she got up and served them. NIV 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. CEBA 16 That evening people brought to Jesus many who were demon-possessed. He threw the spirits out with just a word. He healed everyone who was sick. NIV 16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. CEBA 17 This happened so that what Isaiah the prophet said would be fulfilled: He is the one who took our illnesses and carried away our diseases. NIV 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases." CEBA 18 Now when Jesus saw the crowd, he ordered his disciples to go over to the other side of the lake. NIV 18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. CEBA 19 A legal expert came and said to him, "Teacher, I'll follow you wherever you go." NIV 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." CEBA 20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens, and the birds in the sky have nests, but the Human One has no place to lay his head." NIV 20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." CEBA 21 Another man, one of his disciples, said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." NIV 21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." CEBA 22 But Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead." NIV 22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead." CEBA 23 When Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him. NIV 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. CEBA 24 A huge storm arose on the lake so that waves were sloshing over the boat. But Jesus was asleep. NIV 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. CEBA 25 They came and woke him, saying, "Lord, rescue us! We're going to drown!" NIV 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" CEBA 26 He said to them, "Why are you afraid, you people of weak faith?" Then he got up and gave orders to the winds and the lake, and there was a great calm. NIV 26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. CEBA 27 The people were amazed and said, "What kind of person is this? Even the winds and the lake obey him!" NIV 27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!" CEBA 28 When Jesus arrived on the other side of the lake in the country of the Gadarenes, two men who were demon-possessed came from among the tombs to meet him. They were so violent that nobody could travel on that road. NIV 28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. CEBA 29 They cried out, "What are you going to do with us, Son of God? Have you come to torture us before the time of judgment?" NIV 29 "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?" CEBA 30 Far off in the distance a large herd of pigs was feeding. NIV 30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. CEBA 31 The demons pleaded with him, "If you throw us out, send us into the herd of pigs." NIV 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs." CEBA 32 Then he said to the demons, "Go away," and they came out and went into the pigs. The whole herd rushed down the cliff into the lake and drowned. NIV 32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. CEBA 33 Those who tended the pigs ran into the city and told everything that had happened to the demon-possessed men. NIV 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. CEBA 34 Then the whole city came out and met Jesus. When they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region. NIV 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
