CJB 1 This is a prophecy about Ninveh, the book of the vision of Nachum the Elkoshi: NIV 1 An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. CJB 2 ADONAI is a jealous and vengeful God. ADONAI avenges; he knows how to be angry. ADONAI takes vengeance on his foes and stores up wrath for his enemies. NIV 2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and maintains his wrath against his enemies. CJB 3 ADONAI is slow to anger, but great in power; and he does not leave the guilty unpunished. ADONAI's path is in the whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. NIV 3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet. CJB 4 He rebukes the sea and leaves it dry, he dries up all the rivers. Bashan and the Karmel languish; the flower of the L'vanon withers. NIV 4 He rebukes the sea and dries it up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither and the blossoms of Lebanon fade. CJB 5 The mountains quake before him, and the hills dissolve; the earth collapses in his presence, the world and everyone living in it. NIV 5 The mountains quake before him and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, the world and all who live in it. CJB 6 Who can withstand his fury? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, the rocks broken to pieces before him. NIV 6 Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; the rocks are shattered before him. CJB 7 ADONAI is good, a stronghold in time of trouble; he takes care of those who take refuge in him. NIV 7 The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him, CJB 8 But with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of [Ninveh's] place, and darkness will pursue his enemies. He is making an end [of it]; trouble will not arise a second time. NIV 9 Whatever they plot against the LORD he will bring to an end; trouble will not come a second time. CJB 10 For like men drunk with liquor, they will be burned up like tangled thorns, like straw completely dry. NIV 10 They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble. CJB 11 Out of you, [Ninveh,] he came, one who plots evil against ADONAI, who counsels wickedness. NIV 11 From you, [O Nineveh, ] has one come forth who plots evil against the LORD and counsels wickedness. CJB 12 Here is what ADONAI says: "Though they be many and strong, they will be cut down, they will pass; and though I have made you suffer, I will make you suffer no more. NIV 12 This is what the LORD says: "Although they have allies and are numerous, they will be cut off and pass away. Although I have afflicted you, [O Judah, ] I will afflict you no more. CJB 13 Now I will break his yoke from your necks and snap the chains that bind you. NIV 13 Now I will break their yoke from your neck and tear your shackles away." CJB 14 ADONAI gave this order concerning you: you will have no descendants to bear your name; from the house of your god I will cut off carved image and cast metal image; I will prepare your grave, because you are worthless." NIV 14 The LORD has given a command concerning you, [Nineveh]: "You will have no descendants to bear your name. I will destroy the carved images and cast idols that are in the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are vile." CJB 15 Look! On the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, proclaiming shalom. Keep your festivals, Y'hudah, fulfill your vows; for B'liya'al will never pass through you again; he has been completely destroyed. NIV 15 Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, O Judah, and fulfill your vows. No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.
