Nehemiah 12

CJB 1 These are the cohanim and L'vi'im who went up with Z'rubavel the son of Sh'alti'el, and Yeshua: S'rayah, Yirmeyah, 'Ezra, NIV 1 These were the priests and Levites who returned with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and with Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra, CJB 2 Amaryah, Malukh, Hatush, NIV 2 Amariah, Malluch, Hattush, CJB 3 Sh'khanyah, Rechum, M'remot, NIV 3 Shecaniah, Rehum, Meremoth, CJB 4 'Iddo, Gintoi, Achiyah, NIV 4 Iddo, Ginnethon, Abijah, CJB 5 Miyamin, Ma'adiyah, Bilgah, NIV 5 Mijamin, Moadiah, Bilgah, CJB 6 Sh'ma'yah, Yoyariv, Y'da'yah, NIV 6 Shemaiah, Joiarib, Jedaiah, CJB 7 Salu, 'Amok, Hilkiyah and Y'da'yah. These were the leaders of the cohanim and their kinsmen during the time of Yeshua. NIV 7 Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah and Jedaiah. These were the leaders of the priests and their associates in the days of Jeshua. CJB 8 The L'vi'im: Yeshua, Binui, Kadmi'el, Sherevyah, Y'hudah and Mattanyah, who was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving, he and his kinsmen, NIV 8 The Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and also Mattaniah, who, together with his associates, was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving. CJB 9 with Bakbukyah and 'Uni, their kinsmen, singing antiphonally with them in the service. NIV 9 Bakbukiah and Unni, their associates, stood opposite them in the services. CJB 12 In the days of Yoyakim these were the cohanim who were heads of fathers'clans: of S'rayah, M'rayah; of Yirmeyah, Hananyah; NIV 12 In the days of Joiakim, these were the heads of the priestly families: of Seraiah's family, Meraiah; of Jeremiah's, Hananiah; CJB 13 of 'Ezra, Meshulam; of Amaryah, Y'hochanan; NIV 13 of Ezra's, Meshullam; of Amariah's, Jehohanan; CJB 14 of M'likhu, Yonatan; of Sh'vanyah, Yosef; NIV 14 of Malluch's, Jonathan; of Shecaniah's, Joseph; CJB 15 of Harim, 'Adna; of M'rayot, Helkai; NIV 15 of Harim's, Adna; of Meremoth's, Helkai; CJB 16 of 'Iddo, Z'kharyah; of Ginton, Meshulam; NIV 16 of Iddo's, Zechariah; of Ginnethon's, Meshullam; CJB 17 of Achiyah, Zikhri; of Minyamin, of Mo'adyah, Piltai; NIV 17 of Abijah's, Zicri; of Miniamin's and of Moadiah's, Piltai; CJB 18 of Bilgai, Shamua; of Sh'ma'yah, Y'honatan; NIV 18 of Bilgah's, Shammua; of Shemaiah's, Jehonathan; CJB 19 of Yoyariv, Matnai; of Y'da'yah, 'Uzi; NIV 19 of Joiarib's, Mattenai; of Jedaiah's, Uzzi; CJB 20 of Salai, Kallai; of 'Amok, 'Ever; NIV 20 of Sallu's, Kallai; of Amok's, Eber; CJB 21 of Hilkiyah, Hashavyah; and of Y'da'yah, N'tan'el. NIV 21 of Hilkiah's, Hashabiah; of Jedaiah's, Nethanel. CJB 22 As for the L'vi'im, the heads of fathers' clans in the days of Elyashiv, Yoyada, Yochanan and Yadua were recorded; also the cohanim, up to the reign of Daryavesh the Persian. NIV 22 The family heads of the Levites in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan and Jaddua, as well as those of the priests, were recorded in the reign of Darius the Persian. CJB 23 The descendants of Levi who were heads of fathers' clans were recorded in the annals until the days of Yochanan the [grand]son of Elyashiv. NIV 23 The family heads among the descendants of Levi up to the time of Johanan son of Eliashib were recorded in the book of the annals. CJB 24 The chiefs of the L'vi'im were Hashavyah, Sherevyah and Yeshua the son of Kadmi'el, with their kinsmen in an antiphonal choir, to praise and give thanks, in accordance with the order of David the man of God, choir opposite choir. NIV 24 And the leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua son of Kadmiel, and their associates, who stood opposite them to give praise and thanksgiving, one section responding to the other, as prescribed by David the man of God. CJB 25 Mattanyah, Bakbukyah, 'Ovadyah, Meshulam, Talmon and 'Akuv were the gatekeepers who guarded the supplies kept at the gates. NIV 25 Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon and Akkub were gatekeepers who guarded the storerooms at the gates. CJB 26 This was in the days of Yoyakim the son of Yeshua, the son of Yotzadak, and in the days of Nechemyah the governor and of 'Ezra the cohen and Torah-teacher. NIV 26 They served in the days of Joiakim son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor and of Ezra the priest and scribe. CJB 27 At the dedication of the wall of Yerushalayim, they sought out the L'vi'im from wherever they had settled to bring them to Yerushalayim and celebrate the dedication with hymns of thanksgiving and with songs accompanied by cymbals, lutes and lyres. NIV 27 At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps and lyres. CJB 28 The trained singers assembled together from the area around Yerushalayim, the villages of the N'tofati, NIV 28 The singers also were brought together from the region around Jerusalem--from the villages of the Netophathites, CJB 29 Beit-Gilgal and the region of Geva and 'Azmavet; for the singers had built villages for themselves all around Yerushalayim. NIV 29 from Beth Gilgal, and from the area of Geba and Azmaveth, for the singers had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem. CJB 30 The cohanim and L'vi'im first purified themselves; then they purified the people, the gates and the wall; NIV 30 When the priests and Levites had purified themselves ceremonially, they purified the people, the gates and the wall. CJB 31 and after that I brought the leaders of Y'hudah up onto the wall and appointed two large choirs to give thanks and to walk in procession. One went to the right on the wall toward the Dung Gate. NIV 31 I had the leaders of Judah go up on top of the wall. I also assigned two large choirs to give thanks. One was to proceed on top of the wall to the right, toward the Dung Gate. CJB 32 After them went Hosha'yah and half of the leaders of Y'hudah, NIV 32 Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah followed them, CJB 33 together with 'Azaryah, 'Ezra, Meshulam, NIV 33 along with Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, CJB 34 Y'hudah, Binyamin, Sh'ma'yah and Yirmeyah. NIV 34 Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, Jeremiah, CJB 35 With them were some of the sons of the cohanim carrying trumpets, namely, Z'kharyah the son of Yonatan the son of Sh'ma'yah, the son of Mattanyah, the son of Mikhayah, the son of Zakur, the son of Asaf, NIV 35 as well as some priests with trumpets, and also Zechariah son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, the son of Zaccur, the son of Asaph, CJB 36 and his kinsmen, Sh'ma'yah, 'Azar'el, Milalai, Gilalai, Ma'ai, N'tan'el, Y'hudah and Hanani, who had the musical instruments of David the man of God. 'Ezra the Torah-teacher led them. NIV 36 and his associates--Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah and Hanani--with musical instruments [ prescribed by] David the man of God. Ezra the scribe led the procession. CJB 37 At the Fountain Gate they went straight ahead up the steps to the City of David, where the wall goes up, passed above the house of David, and went on to the Water Gate on the east. NIV 37 At the Fountain Gate they continued directly up the steps of the City of David on the ascent to the wall and passed above the house of David to the Water Gate on the east. CJB 38 The other thanksgiving choir, consisting of half the people, walked on the wall to meet them, with myself following. They went above the Tower of the Furnaces to the Broad Wall, NIV 38 The second choir proceeded in the opposite direction. I followed them on top of the wall, together with half the people--past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall, CJB 39 above the Efrayim Gate, by the gate to the Old City, to the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hanan'el and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate, and halted at the Prison Gate. NIV 39 over the Gate of Ephraim, the Jeshanah Gate, the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate. At the Gate of the Guard they stopped. CJB 40 Thus stood the two choirs of those giving thanks in the house of God, with myself and half of the leaders with me. NIV 40 The two choirs that gave thanks then took their places in the house of God; so did I, together with half the officials, CJB 41 The cohanim there included Elyakim, Ma'aseiyah, Minyamin, Mikhayah, Elyo'einai, Z'kharyah and Hananyah carrying trumpets; NIV 41 as well as the priests--Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah and Hananiah with their trumpets-- CJB 42 also Ma'aseiyah, Sh'ma'yah, El'azar, 'Uzi, Y'hochanan, Malkiyah, 'Eilam and 'Ezer. The singers sang loudly, directed by Yizrachyah. NIV 42 and also Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malkijah, Elam and Ezer. The choirs sang under the direction of Jezrahiah. CJB 43 With joy they offered great sacrifices that day, for God had made them celebrate with great joy. The women and children too rejoiced, so that the celebrating in Yerushalayim could be heard far off. NIV 43 And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away. CJB 44 At that time, men were appointed to be in charge of the storerooms for supplies, contributions, firstfruits and tenths, and to gather into them, from the fields belonging to the cities, the portions prescribed by the Torah for the cohanim and L'vi'im. For Y'hudah rejoiced over the cohanim and L'vi'im who took their position NIV 44 At that time men were appointed to be in charge of the storerooms for the contributions, firstfruits and tithes. From the fields around the towns they were to bring into the storerooms the portions required by the Law for the priests and the Levites, for Judah was pleased with the ministering priests and Levites. CJB 45 carrying out the duties of their God and the duties of purification, as also did the singers and gatekeepers, in accordance with the order of David and of Shlomo his son. NIV 45 They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, as did also the singers and gatekeepers, according to the commands of David and his son Solomon. CJB 46 For back in the days of David and Asaf, there had been leaders for those singing the songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. NIV 46 For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph, there had been directors for the singers and for the songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. CJB 47 So in the days of Z'rubavel and in the days of Nechemyah, all Isra'el gave portions to the singers and gatekeepers as required daily. They set aside a portion for the L'vi'im, who, in turn set aside a portion for the descendants of Aharon. NIV 47 So in the days of Zerubbabel and of Nehemiah, all Israel contributed the daily portions for the singers and gatekeepers. They also set aside the portion for the other Levites, and the Levites set aside the portion for the descendants of Aaron.
