NAS 1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, NIV 1 The LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said: NAS 2 "Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head NIV 2 "Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one. NAS 3 from twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them by their armies. NIV 3 You and Aaron are to number by their divisions all the men in Israel twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army. NAS 4 "With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, each one head of his father's household. NIV 4 One man from each tribe, each the head of his family, is to help you. NAS 5 "These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; NIV 5 These are the names of the men who are to assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; NAS 6 of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; NIV 6 from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; NAS 7 of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; NIV 7 from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; NAS 8 of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; NIV 8 from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; NAS 9 of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; NIV 9 from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon; NAS 10 of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; NIV 10 from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur; NAS 11 of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; NIV 11 from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; NAS 12 of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; NIV 12 from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; NAS 13 of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran; NIV 13 from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran; NAS 14 of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel; NIV 14 from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; NAS 15 of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan. NIV 15 from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan." NAS 16 "These are they who were called of the congregation, the leaders of their fathers' tribes; they were the heads of divisions of Israel." NIV 16 These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the clans of Israel. NAS 17 So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, NIV 17 Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been given, NAS 18 and they assembled all the congregation together on the first of the second month. Then they registered by ancestry in their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head, NIV 18 and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people indicated their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or more were listed by name, one by one, NAS 19 just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai. NIV 19 as the LORD commanded Moses. And so he counted them in the Desert of Sinai: NAS 20 Now the sons of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 20 From the descendants of Reuben the firstborn son of Israel: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 21 their numbered men of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500 . NIV 21 The number from the tribe of Reuben was 46,500. NAS 22 Of the sons of Simeon, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, their numbered men, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 22 From the descendants of Simeon: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 23 their numbered men of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300 . NIV 23 The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300. NAS 24 Of the sons of Gad, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 24 From the descendants of Gad: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 25 their numbered men of the tribe of Gad were 45,650 . NIV 25 The number from the tribe of Gad was 45,650. NAS 26 Of the sons of Judah, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 26 From the descendants of Judah: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 27 their numbered men of the tribe of Judah were 74,600 . NIV 27 The number from the tribe of Judah was 74,600. NAS 28 Of the sons of Issachar, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 28 From the descendants of Issachar: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 29 their numbered men of the tribe of Issachar were 54,400 . NIV 29 The number from the tribe of Issachar was 54,400. NAS 30 Of the sons of Zebulun, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 30 From the descendants of Zebulun: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 31 their numbered men of the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400 . NIV 31 The number from the tribe of Zebulun was 57,400. NAS 32 Of the sons of Joseph, namely, of the sons of Ephraim, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 32 From the sons of Joseph: From the descendants of Ephraim: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 33 their numbered men of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500 . NIV 33 The number from the tribe of Ephraim was 40,500. NAS 34 Of the sons of Manasseh, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 34 From the descendants of Manasseh: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 35 their numbered men of the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200 . NIV 35 The number from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200. NAS 36 Of the sons of Benjamin, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 36 From the descendants of Benjamin: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 37 their numbered men of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400 . NIV 37 The number from the tribe of Benjamin was 35,400. NAS 38 Of the sons of Dan, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 38 From the descendants of Dan: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 39 their numbered men of the tribe of Dan were 62,700 . NIV 39 The number from the tribe of Dan was 62,700. NAS 40 Of the sons of Asher, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 40 From the descendants of Asher: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 41 their numbered men of the tribe of Asher were 41,500 . NIV 41 The number from the tribe of Asher was 41,500. NAS 42 Of the sons of Naphtali, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, NIV 42 From the descendants of Naphtali: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NAS 43 their numbered men of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400 . NIV 43 The number from the tribe of Naphtali was 53,400. NAS 44 These are the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each of whom was of his father's household. NIV 44 These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family. NAS 45 So all the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathers' households, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war in Israel, NIV 45 All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families. NAS 46 even all the numbered men were 603,550 . NIV 46 The total number was 603,550. NAS 47 The Levites, however, were not numbered among them by their fathers' tribe. NIV 47 The families of the tribe of Levi, however, were not counted along with the others. NAS 48 For the LORD had spoken to Moses, saying, NIV 48 The LORD had said to Moses: NAS 49 "Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, nor shall you take their census among the sons of Israel. NIV 49 "You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. NAS 50 "But you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it; they shall also camp around the tabernacle. NIV 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. NAS 51 "So when the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encamps, the Levites shall set it up. But the layman who comes near shall be put to death. NIV 51 Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who goes near it shall be put to death. NAS 52 "The sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own camp, and each man by his own standard, according to their armies. NIV 52 The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each man in his own camp under his own standard. NAS 53 "But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no wrath on the congregation of the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the testimony." NIV 53 The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the Testimony so that wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the Testimony." NAS 54 Thus the sons of Israel did; according to all which the LORD had commanded Moses, so they did. NIV 54 The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses.
