NKJV 1 Now the Lord spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying: NIV 1 The LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said: NKJV 2 "Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male individually, NIV 2 "Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one. NKJV 3 from twenty years old and above--all who are able to go to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall number them by their armies. NIV 3 You and Aaron are to number by their divisions all the men in Israel twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army. NKJV 4 And with you there shall be a man from every tribe, each one the head of his father's house. NIV 4 One man from each tribe, each the head of his family, is to help you. NKJV 5 "These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: from Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; NIV 5 These are the names of the men who are to assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; NKJV 6 from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; NIV 6 from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; NKJV 7 from Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; NIV 7 from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; NKJV 8 from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; NIV 8 from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; NKJV 9 from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; NIV 9 from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon; NKJV 10 from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; NIV 10 from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur; NKJV 11 from Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; NIV 11 from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; NKJV 12 from Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; NIV 12 from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; NKJV 13 from Asher, Pagiel the son of Ocran; NIV 13 from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran; NKJV 14 from Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel; NIV 14 from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; NKJV 15 from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan." NIV 15 from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan." NKJV 16 These were chosen from the congregation, leaders of their fathers' tribes, heads of the divisions in Israel. NIV 16 These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the clans of Israel. NKJV 17 Then Moses and Aaron took these men who had been mentioned by name, NIV 17 Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been given, NKJV 18 and they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they recited their ancestry by families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, each one individually. NIV 18 and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people indicated their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or more were listed by name, one by one, NKJV 19 As the Lord commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai. NIV 19 as the LORD commanded Moses. And so he counted them in the Desert of Sinai: NKJV 20 Now the children of Reuben, Israel's oldest son, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, according to the number of names, every male individually, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 20 From the descendants of Reuben the firstborn son of Israel: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 21 those who were numbered of the tribe of Reuben were forty-six thousand five hundred. NIV 21 The number from the tribe of Reuben was 46,500. NKJV 22 From the children of Simeon, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, of those who were numbered, according to the number of names, every male individually, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 22 From the descendants of Simeon: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 23 those who were numbered of the tribe of Simeon were fifty-nine thousand three hundred. NIV 23 The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300. NKJV 24 From the children of Gad, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 24 From the descendants of Gad: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 25 those who were numbered of the tribe of Gad were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty. NIV 25 The number from the tribe of Gad was 45,650. NKJV 26 From the children of Judah, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 26 From the descendants of Judah: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 27 those who were numbered of the tribe of Judah were seventy-four thousand six hundred. NIV 27 The number from the tribe of Judah was 74,600. NKJV 28 From the children of Issachar, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 28 From the descendants of Issachar: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 29 those who were numbered of the tribe of Issachar were fifty-four thousand four hundred. NIV 29 The number from the tribe of Issachar was 54,400. NKJV 30 From the children of Zebulun, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 30 From the descendants of Zebulun: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 31 those who were numbered of the tribe of Zebulun were fifty-seven thousand four hundred. NIV 31 The number from the tribe of Zebulun was 57,400. NKJV 32 From the sons of Joseph, the children of Ephraim, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 32 From the sons of Joseph: From the descendants of Ephraim: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 33 those who were numbered of the tribe of Ephraim were forty thousand five hundred. NIV 33 The number from the tribe of Ephraim was 40,500. NKJV 34 From the children of Manasseh, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 34 From the descendants of Manasseh: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 35 those who were numbered of the tribe of Manasseh were thirty-two thousand two hundred. NIV 35 The number from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200. NKJV 36 From the children of Benjamin, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 36 From the descendants of Benjamin: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 37 those who were numbered of the tribe of Benjamin were thirty-five thousand four hundred. NIV 37 The number from the tribe of Benjamin was 35,400. NKJV 38 From the children of Dan, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 38 From the descendants of Dan: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 39 those who were numbered of the tribe of Dan were sixty-two thousand seven hundred. NIV 39 The number from the tribe of Dan was 62,700. NKJV 40 From the children of Asher, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 40 From the descendants of Asher: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 41 those who were numbered of the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand five hundred. NIV 41 The number from the tribe of Asher was 41,500. NKJV 42 From the children of Naphtali, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers' house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: NIV 42 From the descendants of Naphtali: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NKJV 43 those who were numbered of the tribe of Naphtali were fifty-three thousand four hundred. NIV 43 The number from the tribe of Naphtali was 53,400. NKJV 44 These are the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each one representing his father's house. NIV 44 These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family. NKJV 45 So all who were numbered of the children of Israel, by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war in Israel-- NIV 45 All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families. NKJV 46 all who were numbered were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty. NIV 46 The total number was 603,550. NKJV 47 But the Levites were not numbered among them by their fathers' tribe; NIV 47 The families of the tribe of Levi, however, were not counted along with the others. NKJV 48 for the Lord had spoken to Moses, saying: NIV 48 The LORD had said to Moses: NKJV 49 "Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, nor take a census of them among the children of Israel; NIV 49 "You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. NKJV 50 but you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, over all its furnishings, and over all things that belong to it; they shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they shall attend to it and camp around the tabernacle. NIV 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. NKJV 51 And when the tabernacle is to go forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall set it up. The outsider who comes near shall be put to death. NIV 51 Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who goes near it shall be put to death. NKJV 52 The children of Israel shall pitch their tents, everyone by his own camp, everyone by his own standard, according to their armies; NIV 52 The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each man in his own camp under his own standard. NKJV 53 but the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony." NIV 53 The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the Testimony so that wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the Testimony." NKJV 54 Thus the children of Israel did; according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so they did. NIV 54 The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses.
