NRS 1 The Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying: NIV 1 The LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said: NRS 2 Take a census of the whole congregation of Israelites, in their clans, by ancestral houses, according to the number of names, every male individually; NIV 2 "Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one. NRS 3 from twenty years old and upward, everyone in Israel able to go to war. You and Aaron shall enroll them, company by company. NIV 3 You and Aaron are to number by their divisions all the men in Israel twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army. NRS 4 A man from each tribe shall be with you, each man the head of his ancestral house. NIV 4 One man from each tribe, each the head of his family, is to help you. NRS 5 These are the names of the men who shall assist you: From Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur. NIV 5 These are the names of the men who are to assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; NRS 6 From Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. NIV 15 from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan." NRS 16 These were the ones chosen from the congregation, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the divisions of Israel. NIV 16 These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the clans of Israel. NRS 17 Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, NIV 17 Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been given, NRS 18 and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation together. They registered themselves in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, individually, NIV 18 and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people indicated their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or more were listed by name, one by one, NRS 19 as the Lord commanded Moses. So he enrolled them in the wilderness of Sinai. NIV 19 as the LORD commanded Moses. And so he counted them in the Desert of Sinai: NRS 20 The descendants of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, individually, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 20 From the descendants of Reuben the firstborn son of Israel: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 21 those enrolled of the tribe of Reuben were forty-six thousand five hundred. NIV 21 The number from the tribe of Reuben was 46,500. NRS 22 The descendants of Simeon, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, those of them that were numbered, according to the number of names, individually, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 22 From the descendants of Simeon: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 23 those enrolled of the tribe of Simeon were fifty-nine thousand three hundred. NIV 23 The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300. NRS 24 The descendants of Gad, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 24 From the descendants of Gad: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 25 those enrolled of the tribe of Gad were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty. NIV 25 The number from the tribe of Gad was 45,650. NRS 26 The descendants of Judah, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 26 From the descendants of Judah: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 27 those enrolled of the tribe of Judah were seventy-four thousand six hundred. NIV 27 The number from the tribe of Judah was 74,600. NRS 28 The descendants of Issachar, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 28 From the descendants of Issachar: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 29 those enrolled of the tribe of Issachar were fifty-four thousand four hundred. NIV 29 The number from the tribe of Issachar was 54,400. NRS 30 The descendants of Zebulun, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 30 From the descendants of Zebulun: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 31 those enrolled of the tribe of Zebulun were fifty-seven thousand four hundred. NIV 31 The number from the tribe of Zebulun was 57,400. NRS 32 The descendants of Joseph, namely, the descendants of Ephraim, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 32 From the sons of Joseph: From the descendants of Ephraim: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 33 those enrolled of the tribe of Ephraim were forty thousand five hundred. NIV 33 The number from the tribe of Ephraim was 40,500. NRS 34 The descendants of Manasseh, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 34 From the descendants of Manasseh: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 35 those enrolled of the tribe of Manasseh were thirty-two thousand two hundred. NIV 35 The number from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200. NRS 36 The descendants of Benjamin, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 36 From the descendants of Benjamin: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 37 those enrolled of the tribe of Benjamin were thirty-five thousand four hundred. NIV 37 The number from the tribe of Benjamin was 35,400. NRS 38 The descendants of Dan, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 38 From the descendants of Dan: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 39 those enrolled of the tribe of Dan were sixty-two thousand seven hundred. NIV 39 The number from the tribe of Dan was 62,700. NRS 40 The descendants of Asher, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 40 From the descendants of Asher: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 41 those enrolled of the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand five hundred. NIV 41 The number from the tribe of Asher was 41,500. NRS 42 The descendants of Naphtali, their lineage, in their clans, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war: NIV 42 From the descendants of Naphtali: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. NRS 43 those enrolled of the tribe of Naphtali were fifty-three thousand four hundred. NIV 43 The number from the tribe of Naphtali was 53,400. NRS 44 These are those who were enrolled, whom Moses and Aaron enrolled with the help of the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each representing his ancestral house. NIV 44 These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family. NRS 45 So the whole number of the Israelites, by their ancestral houses, from twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go to war in Israel— NIV 45 All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families. NRS 46 their whole number was six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty. NIV 46 The total number was 603,550. NRS 47 The Levites, however, were not numbered by their ancestral tribe along with them. NIV 47 The families of the tribe of Levi, however, were not counted along with the others. NRS 48 The Lord had said to Moses: NIV 48 The LORD had said to Moses: NRS 49 Only the tribe of Levi you shall not enroll, and you shall not take a census of them with the other Israelites. NIV 49 "You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. NRS 50 Rather you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the covenant, and over all its equipment, and over all that belongs to it; they are to carry the tabernacle and all its equipment, and they shall tend it, and shall camp around the tabernacle. NIV 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. NRS 51 When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And any outsider who comes near shall be put to death. NIV 51 Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who goes near it shall be put to death. NRS 52 The other Israelites shall camp in their respective regimental camps, by companies; NIV 52 The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each man in his own camp under his own standard. NRS 53 but the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the covenant, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the Israelites; and the Levites shall perform the guard duty of the tabernacle of the covenant. NIV 53 The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the Testimony so that wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the Testimony." NRS 54 The Israelites did so; they did just as the Lord commanded Moses. NIV 54 The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses.
