Numbers 14

CSB 1 Then the whole community broke into loud cries, and the people wept that night. NIV 1 That night all the people of the community raised their voices and wept aloud. CSB 2 All the Israelites complained about Moses and Aaron, and the whole community told them, "If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had died in this wilderness! NIV 2 All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert! CSB 3 Why is the Lord bringing us into this land to die by the sword? Our wives and little children will become plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?" NIV 3 Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?" CSB 4 So they said to one another, "Let's appoint a leader and go back to Egypt." NIV 4 And they said to each other, "We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt." CSB 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell down with their faces [to the ground] in front of the whole assembly of the Israelite community. NIV 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there. CSB 6 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who scouted out the land, tore their clothes NIV 6 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes CSB 7 and said to the entire Israelite community: "The land we passed through and explored is an extremely good land. NIV 7 and said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. CSB 8 If the Lord is pleased with us, He will bring us into this land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and give it to us. NIV 8 If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. CSB 9 Only don't rebel against the Lord, and don't be afraid of the people of the land, for we will devour them. Their protection has been removed from them, and the Lord is with us. Don't be afraid of them!" NIV 9 Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them." CSB 10 While the whole community threatened to stone them, the glory of the Lord appeared to all the Israelites at the tent of meeting. NIV 10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the Tent of Meeting to all the Israelites. CSB 11 The Lord said to Moses, "How long will these people despise Me? How long will they not trust in Me despite all the signs I have performed among them? NIV 11 The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them? CSB 12 I will strike them with a plague and destroy them. Then I will make you into a greater and mightier nation than they are." NIV 12 I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they." CSB 13 But Moses replied to the Lord, "The Egyptians will hear about it, for by Your strength You brought up this people from them. NIV 13 Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them. CSB 14 They will tell [it to] the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, Lord, are among these people, how You, Lord, are seen face to face, how Your cloud stands over them, and how You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. NIV 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, O LORD, are with these people and that you, O LORD, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. CSB 15 If You kill this people with a single blow, the nations that have heard of Your fame will declare, NIV 15 If you put these people to death all at one time, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, CSB 16 'Since the Lord wasn't able to bring this people into the land He swore to [give] them, He has slaughtered them in the wilderness.' NIV 16 'The LORD was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath; so he slaughtered them in the desert.' CSB 17 "So now, may My Lord's power be magnified just as You have spoken: NIV 17 "Now may the Lord's strength be displayed, just as you have declared: CSB 18 The Lord is slow to anger and rich in faithful love, forgiving wrongdoing and rebellion. But He will not leave [the guilty] unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers' wrongdoing on the children to the third and fourth generation. NIV 18 'The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.' CSB 19 Please pardon the wrongdoing of this people in keeping with the greatness of Your faithful love, just as You have forgiven them from Egypt until now." NIV 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now." CSB 20 The Lord responded, "I have pardoned [them] as you requested. NIV 20 The LORD replied, "I have forgiven them, as you asked. CSB 21 Yet as surely as I live and as the whole earth is filled with the Lord's glory, NIV 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth, CSB 22 none of the men who have seen My glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tested Me these 10 times and did not obey Me, NIV 22 not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed in Egypt and in the desert but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times-- CSB 23 will ever see the land I swore to [give] their fathers. None of those who have despised Me will see it. NIV 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it. CSB 24 But since My servant Caleb has a different spirit and has followed Me completely, I will bring him into the land where he has gone, and his descendants will inherit it. NIV 24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it. CSB 25 Since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the lowlands, turn back tomorrow and head for the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea." NIV 25 Since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea." CSB 26 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: NIV 26 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron: CSB 27 "How long [must I endure] this evil community that keeps complaining about Me? I have heard the Israelites' complaints that they make against Me. NIV 27 "How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites. CSB 28 Tell them: As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you exactly as I heard you say. NIV 28 So tell them, 'As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you the very things I heard you say: CSB 29 Your corpses will fall in this wilderness-all of you who were registered [in the census], the entire number of you 20 years old or more-because you have complained about Me. NIV 29 In this desert your bodies will fall--every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me. CSB 30 I swear that none of you will enter the land I promised to settle you in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. NIV 30 Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. CSB 31 I will bring your children whom you said would become plunder into the land you rejected, and they will enjoy it. NIV 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected. CSB 32 But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness. NIV 32 But you--your bodies will fall in this desert. CSB 33 Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for 40 years and bear the penalty for your acts of unfaithfulness until all your corpses lie [scattered] in the wilderness. NIV 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the desert. CSB 34 You will bear the consequences of your sins 40 years based on the number of the 40 days that you scouted the land, a year for each day. You will know My displeasure. NIV 34 For forty years--one year for each of the forty days you explored the land--you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.' CSB 35 I, the Lord, have spoken. I swear that I will do this to the entire evil community that has conspired against Me. They will come to an end in the wilderness, and there they will die." NIV 35 I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this desert; here they will die." CSB 36 So the men Moses sent to scout out the land, and who returned and incited the entire community to complain about him by spreading a bad report about the land- NIV 36 So the men Moses had sent to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble against him by spreading a bad report about it-- CSB 37 those men who spread the report about the land were struck down by the Lord. NIV 37 these men responsible for spreading the bad report about the land were struck down and died of a plague before the LORD. CSB 38 Only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh remained alive of those men who went to scout out the land. NIV 38 Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived. CSB 39 When Moses reported these words to all the Israelites, the people were overcome with grief. NIV 39 When Moses reported this to all the Israelites, they mourned bitterly. CSB 40 They got up early the next morning and went up the ridge of the hill country, saying, "Let's go to the place the Lord promised, for we were wrong." NIV 40 Early the next morning they went up toward the high hill country. "We have sinned," they said. "We will go up to the place the LORD promised." CSB 41 But Moses responded, "Why are you going against the Lord's command? It won't succeed. NIV 41 But Moses said, "Why are you disobeying the LORD's command? This will not succeed! CSB 42 Don't go, because the Lord is not among you and you will be defeated by your enemies. NIV 42 Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies, CSB 43 The Amalekites and Canaanites are right in front of you, and you will fall by the sword. The Lord won't be with you, since you have turned from following Him." NIV 43 for the Amalekites and Canaanites will face you there. Because you have turned away from the LORD, he will not be with you and you will fall by the sword." CSB 44 But they dared to go up the ridge of the hill country, even though the ark of the Lord's covenant and Moses did not leave the camp. NIV 44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up toward the high hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the LORD's covenant moved from the camp. CSB 45 Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that [part of the] hill country came down, attacked them, and routed them as far as Hormah. NIV 45 Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.
