NCV 1 In the first month all the people of Israel arrived at the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried. NIV 1 In the first month the whole Israelite community arrived at the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried. NCV 2 There was no water for the people, so they came together against Moses and Aaron. NIV 2 Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron. NCV 3 They argued with Moses and said, "We should have died in front of the Lord as our brothers did. NIV 3 They quarreled with Moses and said, "If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the LORD! NCV 4 Why did you bring the Lord's people into this desert? Are we and our animals to die here? NIV 4 Why did you bring the LORD's community into this desert, that we and our livestock should die here? NCV 5 Why did you bring us from Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain, figs, grapevines, or pomegranates, and there's no water to drink!" NIV 5 Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!" NCV 6 So Moses and Aaron left the people and went to the entrance of the Meeting Tent. There they bowed facedown, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. NIV 6 Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them. NCV 7 The Lord said to Moses, NIV 7 The LORD said to Moses, NCV 8 "Take your walking stick, and you and your brother Aaron should gather the people. Speak to that rock in front of them so that its water will flow from it. When you bring the water out from that rock, give it to the people and their animals." NIV 8 "Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink." NCV 9 So Moses took the stick from in front of the Lord, as he had said. NIV 9 So Moses took the staff from the LORD's presence, just as he commanded him. NCV 10 Moses and Aaron gathered the people in front of the rock, and Moses said, "Now listen to me, you who turn against God! Do you want us to bring water out of this rock?" NIV 10 He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, "Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?" NCV 11 Then Moses lifted his hand and hit the rock twice with his stick. Water began pouring out, and the people and their animals drank it. NIV 11 Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank. NCV 12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe me, and because you did not honor me as holy before the people, you will not lead them into the land I will give them." NIV 12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them." NCV 13 These are the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites argued with the Lord and where he showed them he was holy. NIV 13 These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD and where he showed himself holy among them. NCV 14 From Kadesh, Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom. The people of Egypt were cruel to us and our ancestors, NIV 15 Our forefathers went down into Egypt, and we lived there many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers, NCV 16 but when we cried out to the Lord, he heard us and sent us an angel to bring us out of Egypt. "Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your land. NIV 16 but when we cried out to the LORD, he heard our cry and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. "Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory. NCV 17 Please let us pass through your country. We will not touch any fields of grain or vineyards, and will not drink water from the wells. We will travel only along the king's road, not turning right or left until we have passed through your country." NIV 17 Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the king's highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory." NCV 18 But the king of Edom answered: "You may not pass through here. If you try, I will come and meet you with swords." NIV 18 But Edom answered: "You may not pass through here; if you try, we will march out and attack you with the sword." NCV 19 The Israelites answered: "We will go along the main road, and if we or our animals drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to walk through. That's all." NIV 19 The Israelites replied: "We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot--nothing else." Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army. NCV 21 The Edomites refused to let them pass through their country, so the Israelites turned back. NCV 22 All the Israelites moved from Kadesh to Mount Hor, NIV 22 The whole Israelite community set out from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor. NCV 23 near the border of Edom. There the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, NIV 23 At Mount Hor, near the border of Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, NCV 24 "Aaron will die. He will not enter the land that I'm giving to the Israelites, because you both acted against my command at the waters of Meribah. NIV 24 "Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I give the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah. NCV 25 Take Aaron and his son Eleazar up on Mount Hor, NIV 25 Get Aaron and his son Eleazar and take them up Mount Hor. NCV 26 and take off Aaron's special clothes and put them on his son Eleazar.
