Numbers 23

CSB 1 Then Balaam said to Balak, "Build me seven altars here and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me." NIV 1 Balaam said, "Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me." CSB 2 So Balak did as Balaam directed, and they offered a bull and a ram on each altar. NIV 2 Balak did as Balaam said, and the two of them offered a bull and a ram on each altar. CSB 3 Balaam said to Balak, "Stay here by your burnt offering while I am gone. Maybe the Lord will meet with me. I will tell you whatever He reveals to me." So he went to a barren hill. NIV 3 Then Balaam said to Balak, "Stay here beside your offering while I go aside. Perhaps the LORD will come to meet with me. Whatever he reveals to me I will tell you." Then he went off to a barren height. CSB 4 God met with him and Balaam said to Him, "I have arranged seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. NIV 4 God met with him, and Balaam said, "I have prepared seven altars, and on each altar I have offered a bull and a ram. CSB 5 Then the Lord put a message in Balaam's mouth and said, "Return to Balak and say what I tell you." NIV 5 The LORD put a message in Balaam's mouth and said, "Go back to Balak and give him this message." CSB 6 So he returned to Balak, who was standing there by his burnt offering with all the officials of Moab. NIV 6 So he went back to him and found him standing beside his offering, with all the princes of Moab. CSB 7 Balaam proclaimed his poem: Balak brought me from Aram; the king of Moab, from the eastern mountains: "Come, put a curse on Jacob for me; come, denounce Israel!" NIV 7 Then Balaam uttered his oracle: "Balak brought me from Aram, the king of Moab from the eastern mountains. 'Come,' he said, 'curse Jacob for me; come, denounce Israel.' CSB 8 How can I curse someone God has not cursed? How can I denounce someone the Lord has not denounced? NIV 8 How can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I denounce those whom the LORD has not denounced? CSB 9 I see them from the top of rocky cliffs, and I watch them from the hills. There is a people living alone; it does not consider itself among the nations. NIV 9 From the rocky peaks I see them, from the heights I view them. I see a people who live apart and do not consider themselves one of the nations. CSB 10 Who has counted the dust of Jacob or numbered the dust clouds of Israel? Let me die the death of the upright; let the end of my [life] be like theirs. NIV 10 Who can count the dust of Jacob or number the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and may my end be like theirs!" CSB 11 "What have you done to me?" Balak asked Balaam. "I brought you to curse my enemies, but look, you have only blessed [them]!" NIV 11 Balak said to Balaam, "What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, but you have done nothing but bless them!" CSB 12 He answered, "Shouldn't I say exactly what the Lord puts in my mouth?" NIV 12 He answered, "Must I not speak what the LORD puts in my mouth?" CSB 13 Then Balak said to him, "Please come with me to another place where you can see them. You will only see the outskirts of their camp; you won't see all of them. From there, put a curse on them for me." NIV 13 Then Balak said to him, "Come with me to another place where you can see them; you will see only a part but not all of them. And from there, curse them for me." CSB 14 So Balak took him to Lookout Field on top of Pisgah, built seven altars, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. NIV 14 So he took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Pisgah, and there he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. CSB 15 Balaam said to Balak, "Stay here by your burnt offering while I seek [the Lord] over there." NIV 15 Balaam said to Balak, "Stay here beside your offering while I meet with him over there." CSB 16 The Lord met with Balaam and put a message in his mouth. Then He said, "Return to Balak and say what I tell you." NIV 16 The LORD met with Balaam and put a message in his mouth and said, "Go back to Balak and give him this message." CSB 17 So he returned to Balak, who was standing there by his burnt offering with the officials of Moab. Balak asked him, "What did the Lord say?" NIV 17 So he went to him and found him standing beside his offering, with the princes of Moab. Balak asked him, "What did the LORD say?" CSB 18 Balaam proclaimed his poem: Balak, get up and listen; son of Zippor, pay attention to what I say! NIV 18 Then he uttered his oracle: "Arise, Balak, and listen; hear me, son of Zippor. CSB 19 God is not a man who lies, or a son of man who changes His mind. Does He speak and not act, or promise and not fulfill? NIV 19 God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill CSB 20 I have indeed received [a command] to bless; since He has blessed, I cannot change it. NIV 20 I have received a command to bless; he has blessed, and I cannot change it. CSB 21 He considers no disaster for Jacob; He sees no trouble for Israel. The Lord their God is with them, and there is rejoicing over the King among them. NIV 21 "No misfortune is seen in Jacob, no misery observed in Israel. The LORD their God is with them; the shout of the King is among them CSB 22 God brought them out of Egypt; He is like the horns of a wild ox for them. NIV 22 God brought them out of Egypt; they have the strength of a wild ox. CSB 23 There is no magic curse against Jacob and no divination against Israel. It will now be said about Jacob and Israel, "What [great things] God has done!" NIV 23 There is no sorcery against Jacob, no divination against Israel. It will now be said of Jacob and of Israel, 'See what God has done!' CSB 24 A people rise up like a lioness; They rouse themselves like a lion. They will not lie down until they devour the prey and drink the blood of the slain. NIV 24 The people rise like a lioness; they rouse themselves like a lion that does not rest till he devours his prey and drinks the blood of his victims." CSB 25 Then Balak told Balaam, "Don't curse them and don't bless them!" NIV 25 Then Balak said to Balaam, "Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!" CSB 26 But Balaam answered him, "Didn't I tell you: Whatever the Lord says, I must do?" NIV 26 Balaam answered, "Did I not tell you I must do whatever the LORD says?" CSB 27 Again Balak said to Balaam, "Please come. I will take you to another place. Maybe it will be agreeable to God that you can put a curse on them for me there." NIV 27 Then Balak said to Balaam, "Come, let me take you to another place. Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them for me from there." CSB 28 So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, which overlooks the wasteland. NIV 28 And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, overlooking the wasteland. CSB 29 Balaam told Balak, "Build me seven altars here and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me." NIV 29 Balaam said, "Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me." CSB 30 So Balak did as Balaam said and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. NIV 30 Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
