Numbers 31

DBY 1 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, DBY 2 Avenge the children of Israel upon the Midianites; afterwards shalt thou be gathered unto thy peoples. NIV 2 "Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people." DBY 3 And Moses spoke to the people, saying, Arm from amongst you men for military service, that they go against Midian to execute Jehovah's vengeance upon Midian. NIV 3 So Moses said to the people, "Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites and to carry out the LORD's vengeance on them. DBY 4 Of every tribe a thousand, of all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war. NIV 4 Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel." DBY 5 And there were levied out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand by tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. NIV 5 So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel. DBY 6 And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand by the tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, and the holy instruments, even the alarm-trumpets in his hand. NIV 6 Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling. DBY 7 And they warred against Midian, as Jehovah had commanded Moses, and slew all the males. NIV 7 They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man. DBY 8 And they slew the kings of Midian, besides the others slain, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian; and Balaam the son of Beor they slew with the sword. NIV 8 Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba--the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. DBY 9 And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took for a spoil all their cattle and all their flocks and all their goods; NIV 9 The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder. DBY 10 and all their cities in their settlements and all their encampments they burned with fire. NIV 10 They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps. DBY 11 And they took all the booty, and all the prey, of man and of cattle; NIV 11 They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals, DBY 12 and they brought to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to the assembly of the children of Israel, the captives and the prey and the booty, to the camp in the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan of Jericho. NIV 12 and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho. DBY 13 And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the princes of the assembly went forth to meet them outside the camp. NIV 13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. DBY 14 And Moses was wroth with the officers of the army, with the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war; NIV 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--who returned from the battle. DBY 15 and Moses said to them, Have ye saved all the women alive? NIV 15 "Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them. DBY 16 Lo, these, through the counsel of Balaam, caused the children of Israel to commit sin against Jehovah in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague on the assembly of Jehovah. NIV 16 "They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people. DBY 17 And now slay every male among the little ones, and slay every woman that hath known man by lying with him, NIV 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, DBY 18 but all the children among the women that have not known lying with a man, keep alive for yourselves. NIV 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. DBY 19 And encamp outside the camp seven days; whoever hath killed a person, and whoever hath touched any slain; ye shall purify yourselves on the third day, and on the seventh day, you and your captives. NIV 19 "All of you who have killed anyone or touched anyone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives. DBY 20 And every garment, and every vessel of skin, and all work of goat's hair, and every utensil of wood shall ye purify. NIV 20 Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood." DBY 21 And Eleazar the priest said to the men of war that had gone to the battle, This is the statute of the law which Jehovah hath commanded Moses. NIV 21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, "This is the requirement of the law that the LORD gave Moses: DBY 22 Only the gold, and the silver, the copper, the iron, the tin, and the lead, NIV 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead DBY 23 everything that passeth through the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean; only it shall be purified with the water of separation; and everything that cannot pass through the fire ye shall make go through the water. NIV 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. DBY 24 And ye shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean; and afterwards ye may come into the camp. NIV 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp." DBY 25 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, NIV 25 The LORD said to Moses, DBY 26 Take the sum of the prey that was taken, of man and of cattle, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the assembly; NIV 26 "You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured. DBY 27 and divide the prey into halves, between them that conducted the war, who went out to the battle, and the whole assembly. NIV 27 Divide the spoils between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community. DBY 28 And thou shalt levy a tribute for Jehovah of the men of war who went out to the army, one soul of five hundred of the persons, and of the oxen, and of the asses, and of the small cattle. NIV 28 From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the LORD one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep or goats. DBY 29 Of their half shall ye take it, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, for a heave-offering of Jehovah. NIV 29 Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part. DBY 30 And of the children of Israel's half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the oxen, of the asses, and of the small cattle, of every [kind of] beasts, and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, who keep the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah. NIV 30 From the Israelites' half, select one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle." DBY 31 And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as Jehovah had commanded Moses. NIV 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses. DBY 32 And the prey, the rest of the spoil, which the men of war had taken, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep, NIV 32 The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep, DBY 33 and seventy-two thousand oxen, NIV 33 72,000 cattle, DBY 34 and sixty-one thousand asses, NIV 34 61,000 donkeys DBY 35 and of human persons, of the women that had not known lying with a man, all the persons were thirty-two thousand. NIV 35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man. DBY 36 And the half, the portion of them that had gone out to the war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep, NIV 36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was: DBY 37 and the tribute for Jehovah of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five; NIV 37 of which the tribute for the LORD was 675; DBY 38 and the oxen were thirty-six thousand, and the tribute thereof for Jehovah, seventy-two; NIV 38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the LORD was 72; DBY 39 and the asses were thirty thousand five hundred, and the tribute thereof for Jehovah, sixty-one; NIV 39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the LORD was 61; DBY 40 and the human persons were sixteen thousand, of whom the tribute for Jehovah was thirty-two persons. NIV 40 16,000 people, of which the tribute for the LORD was 32. DBY 41 And Moses gave the tribute of Jehovah's heave-offering to Eleazar the priest, as Jehovah had commanded Moses. NIV 41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part, as the LORD commanded Moses. DBY 42 And of the children of Israel's half, which Moses had divided, [taking it] from the men that served in the war, NIV 42 The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men-- DBY 43 (now the half belonging to the assembly was of the sheep, three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred, NIV 43 the community's half--was 337,500 sheep, DBY 44 and thirty-six thousand oxen, NIV 44 36,000 cattle, DBY 45 and thirty thousand five hundred asses, NIV 45 30,500 donkeys DBY 46 and sixteen thousand human persons,) NIV 46 and 16,000 people. NIV 47 From the Israelites' half, Moses selected one out of every fifty persons and animals, as the LORD commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle. DBY 48 And the officers who were over the thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near to Moses, NIV 48 Then the officers who were over the units of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--went to Moses DBY 49 and they said to Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war who were under our hand, and there is not one man of us lacking. NIV 49 and said to him, "Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing. DBY 50 So we present the offering of Jehovah, that which each one hath found, jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for our souls before Jehovah. NIV 50 So we have brought as an offering to the LORD the gold articles each of us acquired--armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces--to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD." DBY 51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, all manner of wrought jewels. NIV 51 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold--all the crafted articles. DBY 52 And all the gold of the heave-offering that they offered to Jehovah was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels, from the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds. NIV 52 All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the LORD weighed 16,750 shekels. DBY 53 (The men of war had taken spoil each one for himself.) NIV 53 Each soldier had taken plunder for himself.
