Numbers 31

NKJV 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, NKJV 2 "Take vengeance on the Midianites for the children of Israel. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people." NIV 2 "Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people." NKJV 3 So Moses spoke to the people, saying, "Arm some of yourselves for war, and let them go against the Midianites to take vengeance for the Lord on Midian. NIV 3 So Moses said to the people, "Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites and to carry out the LORD's vengeance on them. NKJV 4 A thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the war." NIV 4 Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel." NKJV 5 So there were recruited from the divisions of Israel one thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. NIV 5 So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel. NKJV 6 Then Moses sent them to the war, one thousand from each tribe; he sent them to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the holy articles and the signal trumpets in his hand. NIV 6 Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling. NKJV 7 And they warred against the Midianites, just as the Lord commanded Moses, and they killed all the males. NIV 7 They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man. NKJV 8 They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of those who were killed--Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. Balaam the son of Beor they also killed with the sword. NIV 8 Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba--the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. NKJV 9 And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captive, with their little ones, and took as spoil all their cattle, all their flocks, and all their goods. NIV 9 The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder. NKJV 10 They also burned with fire all the cities where they dwelt, and all their forts. NIV 10 They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps. NKJV 11 And they took all the spoil and all the booty--of man and beast. NIV 11 They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals, NKJV 12 Then they brought the captives, the booty, and the spoil to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. NIV 12 and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho. NKJV 13 And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation, went to meet them outside the camp. NIV 13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. NKJV 14 But Moses was angry with the officers of the army, with the captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, who had come from the battle. NIV 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--who returned from the battle. NKJV 15 And Moses said to them: "Have you kept all the women alive? NIV 15 "Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them. NKJV 16 Look, these women caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the Lord in the incident of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord. NIV 16 "They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people. NKJV 17 Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man intimately. NIV 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, NKJV 18 But keep alive for yourselves all the young girls who have not known a man intimately. NIV 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. NKJV 19 And as for you, remain outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day. NIV 19 "All of you who have killed anyone or touched anyone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives. NKJV 20 Purify every garment, everything made of leather, everything woven of goats' hair, and everything made of wood." NIV 20 Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood." NKJV 21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to the battle, "This is the ordinance of the law which the Lord commanded Moses: NIV 21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, "This is the requirement of the law that the LORD gave Moses: NKJV 22 Only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, NIV 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead NKJV 23 everything that can endure fire, you shall put through the fire, and it shall be clean; and it shall be purified with the water of purification. But all that cannot endure fire you shall put through water. NIV 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. NKJV 24 And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may come into the camp." NIV 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp." NKJV 25 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: NIV 25 The LORD said to Moses, NKJV 26 "Count up the plunder that was taken--of man and beast--you and Eleazar the priest and the chief fathers of the congregation; NIV 26 "You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured. NKJV 27 and divide the plunder into two parts, between those who took part in the war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation. NIV 27 Divide the spoils between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community. NKJV 28 And levy a tribute for the Lord on the men of war who went out to battle: one of every five hundred of the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep; NIV 28 From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the LORD one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep or goats. NKJV 29 take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest as a heave offering to the Lord. NIV 29 Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part. NKJV 30 And from the children of Israel's half you shall take one of every fifty, drawn from the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep, from all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the Lord." NIV 30 From the Israelites' half, select one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle." NKJV 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses. NIV 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses. NKJV 32 The booty remaining from the plunder, which the men of war had taken, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep, NIV 32 The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep, NKJV 33 seventy-two thousand cattle, NIV 33 72,000 cattle, NKJV 34 sixty-one thousand donkeys, NIV 34 61,000 donkeys NKJV 35 and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of women who had not known a man intimately. NIV 35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man. NKJV 36 And the half, the portion for those who had gone out to war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep; NIV 36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was: NKJV 37 and the Lord's tribute of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five. NIV 37 of which the tribute for the LORD was 675; NKJV 38 The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the Lord's tribute was seventy-two. NIV 38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the LORD was 72; NKJV 39 The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the Lord's tribute was sixty-one. NIV 39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the LORD was 61; NKJV 40 The persons were sixteen thousand, of which the Lord's tribute was thirty-two persons. NIV 40 16,000 people, of which the tribute for the LORD was 32. NKJV 41 So Moses gave the tribute which was the Lord's heave offering to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses. NIV 41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part, as the LORD commanded Moses. NKJV 42 And from the children of Israel's half, which Moses separated from the men who fought-- NIV 42 The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men-- NKJV 43 now the half belonging to the congregation was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep, NIV 43 the community's half--was 337,500 sheep, NKJV 44 thirty-six thousand cattle, NIV 44 36,000 cattle, NKJV 45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, NIV 45 30,500 donkeys NKJV 46 and sixteen thousand persons-- NIV 46 and 16,000 people. NKJV 47 and from the children of Israel's half Moses took one of every fifty, drawn from man and beast, and gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses. NIV 47 From the Israelites' half, Moses selected one out of every fifty persons and animals, as the LORD commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle. NKJV 48 Then the officers who were over thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, came near to Moses; NIV 48 Then the officers who were over the units of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--went to Moses NKJV 49 and they said to Moses, "Your servants have taken a count of the men of war who are under our command, and not a man of us is missing. NIV 49 and said to him, "Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing. NKJV 50 Therefore we have brought an offering for the Lord, what every man found of ornaments of gold: armlets and bracelets and signet rings and earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord." NIV 50 So we have brought as an offering to the LORD the gold articles each of us acquired--armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces--to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD." NKJV 51 So Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from them, all the fashioned ornaments. NIV 51 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold--all the crafted articles. NKJV 52 And all the gold of the offering that they offered to the Lord, from the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels. NIV 52 All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the LORD weighed 16,750 shekels. NKJV 53 (The men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.) NIV 53 Each soldier had taken plunder for himself. NKJV 54 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of meeting as a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord. NIV 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
